Highlights from the APHA 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo, Minneapolis, MN

 

October 27-30, 2024 - The American Public Health Association (APHA) annual meeting is largest public health gathering of the country bringing about 12,000 professionals and partners from around the world to engage, collaborate and grow. This year, the annual meeting was held in Minneapolis from October 27-30, 2024. SPH faculty and students delivered 27 presentations including both, oral and poster formats at the expo. We are incredibly proud of our presenters. 

Dean Joshi served as a panelist and was recognized as a co-recipient of the Harrison C. Spencer Award

During the American Public Health Association Meeting & Expo, Dean Joshi served as a panelist discussing "Messaging and Explaining Public Health in a Climate of Misinformation and Disinformation," showcasing how the University of Memphis School of Public Health is redefining public health. Additionally, Dr. Joshi and the SPH were honored during the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) session as co-recipients of the Harrison C. Spencer Award

27 SPH students and faculty delivered presentations, including both oral and poster formats at APHA this year. 

Our doctoral students received national recognition

Shongkour Roy, doctoral student in Epidemiology, won the APHA student paper award in the medical care section. His paper was titled “Disparities in Spatial-Temporal Patterns of Stroke Mortality in Tennessee from 1969-2020.” 

PhD candidate named APHA Maternal and Child Health Fellow 

The School of Public Health is pleased to announce that Clarion Jamil Harris, a doctoral candidate in Social and Behavioral Sciences, has been selected as a Student Fellow by the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Section of the American Public Health Association for the 2024-2025 academic year. The MCH section works to influence national policy development related to maternal and child health. 

This highly competitive fellowship recognizes Ms. Harris’ commitment to improving maternal and child health, as well as her community experience and research focus on factors that impact the health of children and mothers. 

As a Student Fellow, Clarion will participate in the MCH Leadership Skills Development Training series, policy discussions, and networking opportunities that will enhance her professional impact. She has been invited to serve as a session moderator at the APHA Annual Meeting in October where she will also present her research concerning the relationship of household composition and child mental health outcomes.

Dr. Levy and Dr. Ford present at APHA 

The poster presentations had a feature from Dr. Marian Levy and Dr. Dawn Ford, the immediate past president of the Tennessee Public Health Association. The presentation was entitled "Increasing Awareness of Public Health Through an Extreme Heat Tabletop Exercise". 

Dr. Levy appointed to the APHA Education Board 

Dr. Marian Levy was appointed as an APHA Education Board member. The APHA Education Board is charged with: maintaining and enhancing professional knowledge; increasing technical proficiencies; and enabling members to promote and protect environmental and community health. 

The Board also is committed to aiding APHA's Sections and SPIGs to improve learning opportunities associated with Learning Institutes (formerly Continuing Education Institutes) and scientific sessions on an annual basis.

Alumni and friends reception 

The School of Public Health hosted a highly-anticipated Alumni and Friends Social at APHA. Over 60 alumni, faculty, students, and colleagues celebrated the school’s achievements over the past year, including receiving the prestigious Harrison C. Spencer Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health (ASPPH).
