University of Memphis School of Public Health recognized with Tigers Ascending to Excellence Award
November 4, 2023 - In recognition of securing a grant from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency and RTI International, Drs. Joshi (Dean, University of Memphis School
of Public Health), Jia (Professor of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Environmental
Health) and Titu (Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Environmental
Health) were recognized by President Hardgrave with the Tigers Ascending to Excellence
Award. They were also invited to serve as the honorary coach of the football game
on Saturday, November 4 when the Tigers took on the University of South Florida at
the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
Bringing Public Health Education to High Schools
October 27 - December 6, 2023 - Schools can play a critical role in reducing health
risks through the delivery of effective public health education. It can enhance understanding
of concepts pertaining to population wellness to action that directly or indirectly

UofM School of Public Health offering dual enrollment to high school students to address today’s public health challenges
September 29, 2023 - Media Room - The School of Public Health at the University of
Memphis recently launched an initiative to empower high school students in the Memphis
community and beyond to solve public health challenges facing communities today. Following
the 2022 rollout of its pilot project REAIM, which serves as a model for public health
education in high schools, this semester the School of Public Health introduced a
public health dual-enrollment opportunity for high school juniors and seniors. The

September 24, 2023 - Public health clubs are launching in 23 high schools in the Memphis-Shelby County
School system, with an expert on leave from the World Health Organization visiting
to help the students tangibly see how they can become ambassadors for a healthier
Memphis.

September 22, 2023 - The School of Public Health had the absolute pleasure to welcome
and host Dr. Laura Magaña, President and CEO of the Association of Schools and Programs
of Public Health (ASPPH). She is also the founding President of the Global Network
for Academic Public Health (GNAPH), an alliance of seven regional associations representing
schools and programs of public health worldwide. Under her leadership, ASPPH has continued
to advance academic public health by mobilizing the collective power of its members
to drive excellence and innovation in education, research, and practice.

Fox 13 News interviewed Dean Joshi about polluted neighborhoods
September 19, 2023 - Fox 13 News interviewed Dean Joshi about the incredible work
that the School of Public Health is doing to address pollution through actions of
environmental justice in underserved communities in Memphis, TN and the Mid-South.
As part of a $10M grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and in partnership
with RTI International, the School of Public Health joined other southern schools
to address environmental justice issues in their local communities. “The word ‘justice’ itself means equity for all. To me, that means people should
have all the same resources, same opportunities, same kinds of landscapes where they
can advance their health and well-being,” said Dr. Ashish Joshi, the Dean of the School

August 19, 2023 - Dr. Ashish Joshi, Dean of the School of Public Health, spoke on a panel with other local doctors to
over 100 students at the Determined to Be A Doctor Someday Symposium. This annual
event introduces high schoolers from underrepresented communities in Memphis and northern
Mississippi career pathways in the health field. Dean Joshi and the other panelists

First Meet-and-Greet social – Center for PH-IDEAS hosted 18 scholars from the SCHD
August 7, 2023 - The Center for PH-IDEAS, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
funded project, a collaboration between Memphis and Shelby County Health Department
and University of Memphis School of Public Health, organized its first Meet-and-Greet
social and hosted 18 scholars from the SCHD. Through this program, current health

International Collaboration of UofM SPH with IAPH
The University of Memphis School of Public Health has entered into an international
memorandum of understanding with the International Academy of Public Health based
in Amman, Jordan.
Dr. David Russomanno, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs & Provost for the University of Memphis says of the agreement: "We are delighted to see the establishment of this MOU. Win-win strategic international partnerships are vitally important to growing the impact and visibility of The University of Memphis."
First International Educational Agreement
The School of Public Health and Panimalar Engineering College, Chennai, India have
entered into an international education agreement, which will allow cross-cultural
educational and institutional exchanges between the two institutions. Students working
towards a degree at one institution will be able to take classes and participate in
innovative initiatives at the other institution. The programs included are the Interdisciplinary
Public Health Certificate program, Graduate Certificate in Population Health Informatics,
and the Master of Science in Biostatistics with a Concentration on Data Science in
Public Health certificate program.

Dr. Ashish Joshi, Dean of the School of Public Health, presented his talk on A Population Health Informatics Approach to Advance Health Equity Using SMAART Model
Across Glocal Settings. The audience was comprised of 60 of the brightest students across the state of Tennessee,
who were participating in the Tennessee Governor’s School for International Studies,
a 3-week intensive summer learning opportunity at the University of Memphis.
These programs provide challenging and intensive learning summer experiences for gifted and talented students who will be entering the 11th or 12th grade in the following disciplines: Agricultural Sciences, Arts, Computational Physics, Emerging Technologies, Engineering, Humanities, Information Technology Leadership, International Studies, Prospective Teachers, Sciences, Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage, and Scientific Models and Data Analysis.
UofM SPH Offers APHA Membership to All its Students
The University of Memphis School of Public Health has offered APHA Membership to all
its students.
The APHA is a professional development organization aimed at strengthening public health professionals in research and application. Giving current students access to this membership will support helping them to create solid a foundation and build collaborative community within the public health field.
Professor Kedia's Research Receives International Attention
The released data on substance use related to Senior adults involved in accidents shows increased risks.
Dr. Satish Kedia, professor in the Division of Social, Behavioral Sciences and SBS Ph.D. Program Coordinator and lead PI for this research, and his team recently released data on drinking and driving as it relates to Senior adults. Their analysis of nine years of U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data revealed that substance use in older drivers increased the likelihood of being at fault in a crash by two to four times. The researchers looked at alcohol, marijuana, stimulants, narcotics, depressants and hallucinogens.

University of Memphis a part of EPA's $10-million environmental justice work initiative

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis is one of seven others tapped to be a part of an innovative research initiative focusing on environmental justice in under-served communities. The UofM's School of Public Health will be part of a multi-university collaboration partnering with nonprofit research institute RTI International, according to a release. The group was awarded a $10 million grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

To develop infodemic management capacities for the future, WHO convened a technical
consultation on building a global curriculum for infodemic management on 21-23 March
in Belgrade, Serbia. Hosted by the School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University
of Belgrade, the consultation brought together 47 representatives of academia, public
health and professional associations, and health authorities from six WHO regions.

The Importance of Next Generation of the Public Health Workforce, University of Memphis SPH

The year 2020 witnessed several significant public health challenges, including the
emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, conflict and humanitarian emergencies, mental
health issues, poverty, climate change, child and reproductive health challenges,
misinformation and an infodemic. Globally, health systems were overwhelmed. Public
health departments faced persistent challenges having inadequate staff, limited funding
and a lack of data and technology infrastructures.
Shelby County and U of M Partner to Build Public Health Workforce
February 5, 2023 - After COVID exposed significant gaps in the public health infrastructure
nationwide, the Shelby County Health Department announced it's partnering with the
University of Memphis to build a public health workforce that’s ready for the future.
The health department is one of 107 health departments nationwide to receive funding
from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's $3.2 billion investment in public
health.

Ashish Joshi could give the most seasoned travelers a run for their money. In 2002,
he came to the U.S. from India, with about $3,800 in his pocket, and plans to earn
a master’s degree in public health from Boston University. Then, once he completed
the degree, he took a position at the University of Maryland. In 2009, he started
working on his doctorate at the University of Texas Health Science Center and began
traveling from Baltimore to the institution once a week.

Graduate Certificate in Population Health Informatics - SPH Launched New Program
The Graduate Certificate in Population Health Informatics is designed to equip students with an in-depth understanding of informatics that supports the development of interventions addressing 21st century public health challenges. Students will acquire the skills necessary to apply technology at the intersection of clinical care and health sciences, strengthening preventive care at the population level. Upon graduation, it is expected that most students will work in fields related to public health, implementation science, and health technology innovations. Examples of employment titles graduates might hold include chief information officer, health informatics analyst, corporate health information officer, system analyst, project manager, system engineer, project developer, health informatics consultant, research associate, applied health informatics researcher, data analytics/data mining engineer, data sets/nomenclature and classification standards developer, and health information applications developer.
Master of Science in Biostatistics: Data Sciences in Public Health Concentration - SPH Launched New Program
In the era of large and high-dimensional data, the demand for biostatisticians trained in data sciences has increased dramatically. Our Master of Science in Biostatistics with a concentration in Data Science in Public Health teaches students to apply data analysis methods combined with machine learning skills to efficiently biomedical research data. Graduates of the program will be able to analyze large data using methods such as pattern detection and be proficient in data management and data mining. The program will prepare students for doctoral programs in related fields or employment in sectors such as research, government, or private industry.
