SCHD COVID-19 Volunteers Needed: The Shelby County Health Department needed volunteers to assist with the COVID-19 response. The work involved telephone contacting of cases and contacts of cases. Those interested we advised to email Dr. Marian Levy with contact information by noon Tuesday, April 28th.

Healthy Children Project's Lactation Counselor Training Course (March 9-13, 2020): The School of Public Health hosted the Healthy Children Project's Lactation Counselor Training Course from March 9-13, 2020. This was a comprehensive, evidence-based, breastfeeding management course with a strong focus on clinical counseling and assessment skills. Go to website>

Dr. Courtnee Melton-Fant awarded $6,000 from the National League of Cities for her project: Dr. Courtnee Melton-Fant, assistant professor in the Division of Health Systems Management and Policy, was awarded $6,000 from the National League of Cities for her project "Does state-level preemption of inclusionary zoning policies contribute to racial and socioeconomic health inequalities among adults.

Together We NARCAN: Free Narcan Training for Students, Faculty, Staff: The Loewenberg College of Nursing has partnered with the UTHSC College of Pharmacy and the Mid-South Area Prevention Coalition Specialists to host a seminar with a presentation and a demonstration of basic life saving skills and Narcan administration. The event took place on Monday, March 2nd at 3:30pm in the University of Memphis' Community Health Building Room 2010. Everyone who attended received a FREE Narcan Kit at the end of the one-hour session.

Emergency department and inpatient utilization among U.S. older adults with multiple chronic conditions: a post-reform update: Older Medicare beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions increased emergency department (ED) visits but decreased inpatient utilization throughout the course of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), according to a study published in BMC Health Services Research.

Dr. SangNam Ahn, University of Memphis School of Public Health, led the study with other researchers including Dr. Mustafa Hussein of University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee, Dr. Asos Mahmood of University of Memphis School of Public Health, and Dr. Matthew Lee Smith of Texas A&M School of Public Health. SPH Student Achievement Awards: The School of Public Health is pleased to offer Student Achievement Awards to recognize one outstanding student in each of our six Master's and Doctoral Programs. Students may be nominated by faculty or nominate themselves for this award, which includes cash prizes of $300 for Master's students and $500 for Doctoral students. The application deadline is March 1, 2020.
