Health Systems Management and Policy
Learn. Lead. Care.
Brief
The Health Systems Management and Policy (HSMP) Division within the School of Public Health (SPH) at the University of Memphis is committed to education, research, and service aimed at improving the organization, financing, and delivery of healthcare. Faculty are engaged in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health policies and are committed to producing a more equitable and efficient healthcare system.
The HSMP Division is dedicated to equipping students and the community with tools needed to improve access to and quality of care, address healthcare costs, and improve processes and outcomes of health services and policies. With an award-winning emphasis on leadership and professional development, students are provided the knowledge, skills, real-world experiences, networks, and credentials, to obtain professional positions in a multifaceted, changing healthcare system. This effort is achieved primarily through the Division’s Master of Health Administration (MHA) program and the Certificate in Health Systems Leadership.
The MHA Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). It is the first CAHME-accredited program in the state of Tennessee and is nationally ranked by the U.S. News and World Report. Housed within the School of Public Health which is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), the MHA program is offered both on campus and entirely online. Across the country, MHA graduates occupy management and leadership positions and other roles important to the administrative functioning of health systems and organizations.
To advance theory and practice throughout the healthcare industry, the HSMP Division has developed strong partnerships with the local and regional healthcare community and employs a multidisciplinary approach in its efforts. Core and adjunct HSMP faculty present with expertise in health systems management, health economics, health policy, health equity/disparities, and program evaluation. Collaboration exists with others in the SPH with expertise in social and behavioral science, epidemiology, biostatistics, and environmental health. The SPH was recently one of two recipients of the ASPPH Harrison C. Spencer Award for Outstanding Community Service. Thus, the HSMP Division provides students with opportunities to learn and be mentored by a range of professionals within the SPH and beyond, with focus on improving the health and well-being of patients served within a multitude of health care institutions.
