Student Concerns or Complaints
The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is committed to providing a positive environment for all members of the Law School community. Unfortunately, concerns or complaints may nevertheless arise at times.
The Law School is an ABA-accredited school and is, therefore, subject to the ABA Standards for Approval of Law Schools. The Standards may be found here. Under ABA Standard 510, a law school “shall adopt, publish, and adhere to a policy or policies for addressing student complaints.” Academic Regulation 23 (available here) sets forth the Law School's Student Complaint Procedure in full.
Students may raise concerns or complaints regarding Law School issues in the following ways:
- INFORMAL COMPLAINTS: Students may informally raise complaints or concerns directly with the Dean (Dean Strickland), the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (Dean Wilson), or the Assistant Dean for Law Student Affairs (Dean Aden) either in person or through email.
- FORMAL COMPLAINTS: Students may submit a Formal Complaint by submitting the Formal Complaint Form. See Academic Regulation 23 for further detail regarding the Formal Complaint process.
- HONOR CODE VIOLATIONS: Refer to Academic Regulation 21 for the procedures for making an Honor Code referral.
- GRADE APPEALS: Refer to Academic Regulation 22 for the procedures for Grade Appeals.
- COMPLAINTS REGARDING DISCRIMINATION, HARASSMENT OR RETALIATION are addressed by the University's Office of Institutional Equity. Submit such complaints using this form.
