Student Spotlight: Frans Samosir – Pioneering Change in HIV and Substance Use Prevention
Meet Frans Samosir, a PhD candidate in Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Memphis, whose passion for public health, specifically HIV and substance use prevention, has guided his journey from North Sumatra, Indonesia, to Memphis. With a rich background in psychology and public health from the University of Georgia, Frans joined UofM in August 2023 and aims to graduate in May 2027. His research, focused on HIV, substance use intervention, and mental health awareness, especially within underserved communities, drives him to develop impactful solutions for those most in need.
Finding UofM and His Inspiration Although UofM wasn’t originally on Frans’ radar, a recommendation led him to discover the university's extensive work on public health issues closely aligned with his interests. He was drawn to the diverse backgrounds and expertise of the faculty, whose focus on HIV, substance use, and mental health closely matched his experience and ambitions. Frans’ commitment to these fields, honed over a decade, aligns seamlessly with his program, allowing him to pursue his goals while expanding his expertise.
Balancing Academics and Life Frans credits his psychology and social sciences background for his strong skills in time management, helping him balance academic responsibilities with his personal life. He maintains his focus through strategic planning and nightly reflections, keeping a mindset that emphasizes purpose and growth. When he's not studying, Frans enjoys traveling—he has already visited over 30 U.S. states—and finds relaxation in solo adventures, nature, and even recording his own music albums.
Memorable Moments and Campus Involvement A standout moment at UofM for Frans has been his work with Global Friends Memphis, where he was recently appointed student president. This role has allowed him to connect with both local and international communities, building networks and serving as a bridge for cross-cultural exchange. Academically, his favorite course, Behavioral Intervention, has given him practical experience with community engagement in Memphis, deepening his understanding of the city’s health challenges.
Advice for Fellow Graduate Students Frans encourages students to nurture self-awareness, surround themselves with sources of hope and encouragement, and “get a helmet for the crazy but fruitful ride.” His journey exemplifies resilience and dedication to personal growth, academic excellence, and societal impact.
Looking Forward Upon completing his studies, Frans aspires to engage in research and policy development that leads to sustainable public health solutions. He hopes his work will bridge the gap between theory and practice, creating impactful change in the fields of HIV, substance use, and mental health.
