Sushant MarasiniA Journey from Nepal to Memphis to Pursue Hospitality

The University of Memphis Graduate School is proud to spotlight Sushant Marasini, a Master’s student in Hospitality Management at the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality Management (KWS) from Nepal, a country renowned for its natural beauty and cultural richness. Sushant’s academic and professional journey exemplifies resilience, dedication, and a passion for hospitality.

From Nepal to Memphis: A Global Journey in Hospitality

Sushant’s career began with a bachelor’s degree in Travel and Tourism Management, followed by a graduate degree in Public Administration. Over nearly two decades in the hospitality sector, he progressed from a kitchen trainee to a certified Sustainable Tourism Trainer under the European Union's ERASMUS+ program.

Recognizing the importance of global academic exposure, he chose to further his studies at the University of Memphis, drawn by its R1 research classification, cultural diversity, and the unique dual focus of the KWS program on hospitality and sports management.

"The University of Memphis felt like the perfect fit with its welcoming academic environment, strong industry connections, and unwavering support for international students," Sushant shared.

A Transformative Teaching Experience

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at KWS, Sushant has had the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students, refine his teaching skills, and deepen his understanding of the hospitality industry. The sense of community within KWS, where faculty and staff treat students like family, has been a standout aspect of his time at UofM.

From organizing events like New Student Orientation and the Thomas Boggs Memorial Golf Tournament to attending career fairs and industry conferences like the Southern Lodging Summit, Sushant has embraced every opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Resilience

Adjusting to a new cultural and academic environment while balancing his coursework, teaching responsibilities, and personal commitments wasn’t without its challenges. Being away from his family in Nepal added an emotional layer to his journey.

Through time management, mentorship, and active engagement in campus activities, Sushant found ways to stay resilient. "Staying connected with my family and leaning on my support system helped me adapt and thrive in this new environment," he reflected.

A Vision for the Future

Sushant aspires to bridge the gap between academia and the hospitality industry by establishing a hospitality management company that integrates sustainable practices and cutting-edge technology.

"The knowledge and skills I’ve gained at UofM are laying a strong foundation for my future goals," he said.

Memorable Moments and Gratitude

Sushant MarasiniAmong his many achievements, Sushant highlights receiving a scholarship and stipend from Dr. Radesh Palakurthi, earning a Certificate in Hospitality Industry Analytics (CHIA), and presenting research at a conference in Houston as pivotal moments.

He said he is honored to be Nepali student spotlighted by UofM and to represent KWS. Sushant said, "I’m deeply grateful for this journey and look forward to contributing to the global hospitality industry."
