A Letter from the Dean of the UofM Graduate School: Our 2024 Recap

Dear Graduate Students, Faculty, and Friends of the Graduate School,

As we prepare to close out another year, it is a natural time for reflection. This year has brought its share of challenges, triumphs, and growth opportunities—for our university, our graduate programs, and each of us individually. It has been a privilege to witness the achievements of our graduate community and to work with some many wonderful people on campus committed to supporting our graduate students. Here are some of our accomplishments:

  • We had the largest number of graduates in 2024 that we have ever had.
  • In 2024, we launched a new health insurance program for graduate and international students and a health insurance benefit for our full-time graduate assistants. Full-time graduate assistants' health insurance premiums are covered 100% by the University of Memphis. This is a substantial move forward in compensating students who contribute so much to the research and teaching mission of the university and will increase our ability to recruit the best and brightest students.
  • We created an alumni advisory board that will serve as ambassadors for graduate education and help us to connect with alumni and potential donors.
  • We continued to refine our application portal to enhance the experience of applicants and department reviewers.
  • We have a number of new programs that meet workforce needs, such as a new graduate certificate in regulatory affairs for medical devices.

The turn of the year is also a time to look forward. Many of us engage in the tradition of setting resolutions, identifying goals, and envisioning the path ahead. As scholars and practitioners, we understand that setting meaningful goals is not merely about ambition but about purpose and perseverance. Resolutions provide a chance to align our daily efforts with our broader aspirations, to recommit to personal growth, and to contribute meaningfully to our communities.

In the Graduate School, we embrace this spirit of intentionality. This year, we have strived to expand opportunities for professional development, increase access to financial resources, and foster a culture of inclusivity and innovation. These are not just institutional goals; they are a reflection of our commitment to your success and well-being. As we step into the new year, we remain dedicated to these priorities and look forward to building upon them together.

I encourage each of you to take time to consider your own resolutions for the coming year. Perhaps you aim to advance your research, forge new collaborations, or find greater balance between your academic and personal life. Whatever your goals may be, know that the Graduate School is here to support you. We are a community that thrives on shared success, and your achievements inspire all of us.

Let us approach the new year with optimism and determination, ready to embrace both the challenges and the opportunities it will bring. Thank you for your hard work, your dedication, and the passion you bring to your studies and endeavors. Together, we can make the coming year one of extraordinary progress and fulfillment.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season and a successful start to the new year.

Warm regards,

Dr. Deborah Tollefsen
Vice Provost and Dean of the UofM Graduate School
