International Merit Scholarship (IMS)
The University of Memphis (UofM) selectively awards competitive merit-based scholarships for newly admitted degree-seeking international students on a J-1 or F-1 visa taking classes on campus. We value scholarly achievement and academic success and want to attract the best and brightest students to join our cutting-edge programs and to learn from our world-renowned faculty.
Please note: Dual citizens and/or permanent residents are not eligible for this scholarship. This scholarship is for entering first-time applicants only. Continuing or enrolled students are not eligible for this scholarship. Students receiving assistantships or other university funding are not eligible for this scholarship.

The IMS scholarship is not available for the Summer term.
Undergraduate Student Eligibility Requirements:
- Opt into being considered for the IMS scholarship in your Tiger Tracks Portal
- Admitted to the University of Memphis
- 25 ACT or 1200 SAT equivalent
OR - 3.25 U.S.A. equivalent undergraduate degree GPA as determined by a credential evaluation agency (www.naces.org or www.aice-eval.org). SpanTran and IEE are our recommended international transcript evaluation services. They have created a custom application for the University of Memphis that will help you select the right kind of evaluation at a discounted rate. To maintain this scholarship award, students must be continuously enrolled in full-time credit hours each fall and spring semester. Additionally, students must earn a 2.75 UofM GPA or higher in the first two semesters and a 3.0 UofM GPA or higher for subsequent semesters. This scholarship is a four-year (eight semesters) renewable scholarship requiring recipients to take a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.
Graduate Student Eligibility Requirements:
- Admitted to the University of Memphis
- 310 GRE with at least 150 in GRE Verbal AND 150 in GRE Quantitative AND 2.5 AWA or
equivalent GMAT scores
OR - 3.25 U.S.A. equivalent cumulative undergraduate degree GPA as determined by a credential evaluation agency (www.naces.org or www.aice-eval.org) or relevant master's degree from an accredited and approved institution. To maintain this scholarship award, students must be continuously enrolled in full-time credit hours each fall and spring semester. Additionally, students must earn a 3.25 UofM GPA or higher every semester.
Award Amount
Award amounts vary and can potentially cover the difference in cost of international and domestic non-Tennessee resident tuition rates. This scholarship cannot be combined with other UofM institutional scholarships. Exceptions are allowed for departmental funding.

Graduate assistantships are awarded through each individual department. Please contact your department to find out more about the application process. The ISS Office is not involved in the decision-making process for graduate assistantships; for more information, please visit the Graduate School's page on assistantships.
