Thank you for your interest in obtaining a Graduate Degree in Special Education from the UofM. Special Education teachers remain a critical need across the United States. At the UofM, we can provide you with the skills, training, and experiences to prepare you for a career in Special Education.


Degrees:

Bachelor of Science in Education (BSEd) in Teaching All Learners (TALN)

TALN is an undergraduate bachelor's degree plan leading to dual teacher licensure in both Special Education and K-6 Elementary Education.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The MAT program offers those without a bachelor's degree in teaching the option to further their education while obtaining an initial teaching license.

The program leads to Special Education teacher licensure in:

  • 459 Special Education PreK-3
  • 144 Interventionist K-8 (Online option) 
  • 145 Interventionist 6-12 (Online option)
  • 461 Special Education Comprehensive (Online option)

Master of Science (MS)

The MS program offers those with a teaching license the ability to further their education while obtaining a specialty in a specific area of special education.

Alternately, the MS is available as an initial program of studies leading to Behavior Analyst Certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), see ABA Program for details.

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The EdD program offers a specialized set of courses leading to a terminal degree in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership. Those seeking advanced research skills have the option of specializing in Special Education (General Studies) or Applied Behavior Analysis (Initial or Advanced Certification).

Multi-Tier Systems of Support

Designed to provide practical training to individuals who are presently teaching or are interested in working with student's learning and behavioral disorders in K-12 and alternative settings for school age children.

Designed for individuals seeking certification in Comprehensive Special Education or wanting to enhance their knowledge in teaching students with extensive support needs (ESN) or Low Incidence Disabilities

Application Deadlines:

To begin courses in the Fall Semester, application must be received by March 1
To begin courses in the Spring Semester, application must be received by October 1

**SPED MAT students will adhere to the Teacher Education Preparation (TEP) Program requirements and receive advisement through the TEP office.

**SPED MS and Ed.D. students may be asked to provide a writing sample and be interviewed prior to admittance.

It is strongly recommended that application packets be submitted in early February or early September which includes having taken the Graduate Record Examination several weeks prior to the deadline dates in order to receive full consideration by special education faculty. A delay in submitting application materials could result in not being considered for admission until the following semester.
