About Dr. O'Neill
Errol M. O'Neill is an Assistant Professor, Course Coordinator, and Supervisor of Graduate Teaching Assistants in French at the University of Memphis. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in French SLATE (Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education). Errol teaches both undergraduate and graduate level courses, including novice and intermediate French, pedagogy, translation, and French for special purposes. In addition to face-to-face instruction, Errol developed the online basic language sequence for French (FREN 1010-2020), which is offered on U of M Global. His research explores the intersection of language learning and technology. The primary focus of Errol's work concerns the role of free online resources, specifically online translators (e.g. Google Translate) and online dictionaries (e.g. WordReference), in second language learning. Errol's research has investigated the frequency of online translator and dictionary usage among students, the effects of student use of these tools on their composition writing, the impact of training students in the appropriate use of online tools, and the implications for the modern second language classroom.
