Language Placement and Credit

Placement Testing Information

Placement tests are available for French, German, and Spanish. Email wll@memphis.edu to request a placement test in these languages.

The placement test is online and multiple-choice and covers basic vocabulary, grammar, and reading knowledge. The test takes approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. Results are provided immediately upon exam completion.

A student may not attempt the placement exam in any language more than twice. In addition, a student may not take the placement exam more than once in a given week.

If you need to be assessed in Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, or Latin, please contact the Department of World Languages and Literatures at wll@memphis.edu.

Credit by Examination

The department does not normally award credit by examination for languages taught in the department, except in extenuating circumstances.

Students with competency in languages not taught in the department may be able to take a credit by examination exam through the FLATS program run by Brigham Young University, for which our department is an approved proctor. More information can be found here. The department can also proctor exams offered by New York University.

The University of Memphis does offer the CLEP exam through the Testing Center. This exam allows student the option for credit by examination in French, German, and Spanish.
