Christina Gómez is an Assistant Professor of Teaching at the University of Memphis where she teaches courses in the Spanish Basic Language Program and serves as the SPAN 2020 Team Leader, leading the standardization of this course. In the spring of 2020, Christina redeveloped Spanish 2020 to incorporate more conversation and writing at the intermediate-high level, designing materials and activities for the 2020 Instructional Team to use in their classroom. This initiative was to help bridge the gap between the basic Spanish courses and the advanced Spanish courses in effort to better prepare students for advanced languages classes. In the Fall of 2019, she redesigned the Spanish language bulletin boards in the language department as well as co-organized a workshop for their publisher to come to campus and present the new additions in the Spanish textbooks along with innovative ways to teach and connect to students using the online platform. Christina helped start the Spanish Club as a student at the University of Memphis and served as a Spanish Club mentor in 2019. Christina is a valuable contributor to the Basic Spanish program, each semester she meets with her colleagues to develop material, plan activities, and implement changes. This program is standardized to ensure consistency across language courses. Christina has done several mini-workshops for colleagues and graduate students regarding technology, engaging students, teaching strategies, course organization, and student retention. She is on the department's Student Engagement Committee. Each semester Christina has teaching assistants in her classes whom she mentors. In addition to her service at the university, she fosters and rescues dogs and is involved in several local rescues and animal shelters. She travels yearly to Honduras and she led a group of students on a study abroad trip to Spain in 2017. Christina has a passion for the Spanish language, community, and empowering students to connect to the language and culture.
