1098-T Information
In January of each year the University of Memphis prepares IRS Form 1098-T for all eligible students. This form is used by students and parents to claim the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit when they file their income tax returns. By default, the school will send you a copy of Form 1098-T by U.S. Mail. By selecting the electronic-only delivery option, instead of receiving the form in the mail you will retrieve it from TigerXpress. The forms will be available to you as soon as they are published, no later than January 31, and they will remain available to you indefinitely. The school will send you an e-mail reminder when the forms become available.
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 allows a tax credit to be claimed for out-of-pocket payments made to eligible higher education institutions during the tax year for qualified tuition and fees. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires that colleges and universities provide a 1098-T, Tuition Statement for the purpose of determining a taxpayer’s eligibility for various education tax credit or deductions. This form is for informational purposes only.
Electronic Consent (2024 1098-T Forms)
In an effort to be more environmentally conscious, the University Business & Student Services Office is now providing students with the option to receive their 1098-T tax form online via TigerXpress instead of by postal mail. To receive your form electronically, choose "Tax Forms" on the left column of options once you have signed into your account. You will then have the option to sign up for paperless delivery. Please note that your consent will apply to every year that a 1098-T statement is furnished. If you would like a paper copy of the form after you have consented to online delivery, you can print a copy of the form from the Tax Forms page.
Students that have not consented to receive their 1098-T statements electronically will have a paper statement mailed to them by January 31st. If you have not received your mailed form by February 7th, please verify that the University of Memphis has your correct address. To update your address or other personal information, please visit the Registrar's Office.

Understanding your 1098-T
In years prior to 2018, colleges had the option of completing either Box 1 or Box 2 related to Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses (QTRE). Box 1 represented Payments whereas Box 2 was for calculated Billings. Federally mandated tax reporting now mandates colleges report in Box 1. Box 1 of Form 1098-T reports the Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses paid during the calendar year, up to the amount billed for these expenses. It is important to note that not all charges are QTRE. Generally, tuition and mandatory fees will be included in Box 1. However, dorm charges, meal plans charges, parking fines, late fees, and other non-mandatory fees are not reported in Box 1.
Additionally, any scholarships or grants received during the year will be reported in Box 5. Amounts reported in this box may include student loans, scholarship awards, tuition waivers provided during a calendar year due to the student's status as an eligible UofM staff member or the spouse/dependent of a UofM staff member.
To qualify for a tax credit when filing your Federal Income Taxes, the student receiving credit for the payment must be either yourself or your dependent. The 1098-T form is not required when filing your Federal Income Taxes. The primary purpose of this form is to let you know that the University of Memphis has provided the required information to the IRS to assist them in determining who may be eligible to claim the education credits available.
