University Accessibility Committee
Purpose
The people of the University of Memphis are driven by doing the right thing for our disabled community. Sometimes this requires us to look beyond mere compliance with the law to create an environment that is truly accessible to individuals with disabilities. As such, the University Accessibility Committee (UAC) is made up of faculty, staff, and students whose purpose is to thoughtfully consider and eliminate potential and existing barriers to equal access and participation in University programs, activities, and our physical environment.
Get Involved
We are always looking for eager faculty and staff willing to share their time and creativity to better improve the learning environments for our students. If you would like to join the University Accessibility Committee, please contact Tara Buchannan by emailing tmbchnnn@memphis.edu.
Committee Structure
The UAC is divided into the following four (4) subcommittees. Each committee has 2 co-chairs that provide guidance and help the subcommittees to establish goals for the year. The co-chairs determine how often subcommittees meet, schedule the meetings, and set the agenda for each meeting. Subcommittees meet regularly (either monthly or bi-weekly) to accomplish their goals. The overall committee meets once a year to go over accomplishments from the previous year and to discuss goals for the upcoming year. The UAC chair and subcommittee co-chairs meet monthly for updates on progress and planning.
The Physical Environment Subcommittee addresses existing or potential barriers in
the built environment.
The Digital and Learning Environment Subcommittee seeks to increase accountability
and ensure a campus-wide culture of meeting Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and
digital accessibility standards.
The purpose of the policy and procedural environment subcommittee is to establish campus policy and procedure to improve usability and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Learn MoreThe purpose of the Campus Events Committee is to evaluate and influence policies and
