Tiger Family Resource Hub: Student Involvement
Research highlights the positive influence of involvement outside the classroom on ways in which students grow and develop. Students who are involved in experiences outside of the classroom perform better in academics and in life. UofM offers numerous ways for students to experience leadership, diversity, community spirit, and Memphis pride.
Registered Student Organizations
The University of Memphis currently has over 250 Registered Student Organizations (RSO) and the numbers are growing every day. Registered Student Organizations (RSO) offer programs, events, leadership opportunities, and activities that reflect the diverse nature of our student body.
Whether your student is looking for a group that supports athletics or the arts, community service or cultural awareness, religious or political activism, the Greek community or academic scholarship, there's an Registered Student Organization for them at the UofM.
Campus Events
If your student feels like they don’t have time to commit to a group, encourage them to attend campus events. This is another great way to get involved and meet new people. The Student Leadership & Involvement office hosts many free events throughout the year. Your student can also find hundreds of campus events on the Tiger Zone Events Calendar.
Service Opportunities
The Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism (CSLV) provides services to students, faculty, staff and community partners to encourage community service-learning that is mutually beneficial to the university and our local community. Students can choose from a wide variety of opportunities with over 100 community partners. Whether a student is looking for a one-time volunteer opportunity or a recurring spot, CSLV can help them find a fit to enhance their academic learning. The Center also hosts Days of Service and Service on Saturday during the Fall and Spring Semesters to encourage students to serve the community together.
Leadership Development
The Student Leadership & Involvement office offers a variety of leadership training programs designed to compliment your student's academic experiences. They are often free of charge and provide your student with valuable skills and knowledge that can be used inside and outside the classroom in their everyday lives and future careers.
Campus Recreation
Campus Recreation and Intramural Services (CRIS) manages the Campus Recreation Center and offers a variety of recreation activities. Students can participate in Fitness and Aerobic classes or sign up for personal training sessions. Intramural and club sports are offered in both the Fall and Spring semesters. CRIS also offers students the opportunity to rent outdoor gear if they would like to enjoy the great outdoors, but are unable to store their personal equipment in their dorm or apartment.
First Generation Students
The Office of First Generation Student Success supports first-generation (students who are the first to go to college in their family or whose parents did not graduate from college) college students. Students have opportunities to meet fellow students, and build strong academic and social foundations for their academic journey.
Study Abroad
The Study Abroad Office provides rigorous academic programs with a cross-cultural learning experience that is not available in the United States.
More than 200 semester, academic year and short-term programs in over 60 countries worldwide are offered to meet the diverse needs of the University of Memphis student population.
Encourage your student to think early about study aboard and how it might fit into their academic schedule. Scholarships are available for students and financial aid may also be used towards covering the costs of studying abroad.
Fraternity & Sorority Life
About 10% of the undergraduate population at the University is a member of a fraternity or sorority. These organizations recruit new members in the fall and spring semesters. The Fraternity & Sorority Affairs under the Office of Student Leadership & Involvement oversees all Greek organizations on campus and is ready to answer student and parent questions.
Athletic Events
Full-time students can attend all UofM athletic events hosted in UofM facilities for free with their student id. Students also have the opportunity to purchase guest tickets to sit with them in the student section. Student parking is available at the Liberty Bowl and FedExForum but is very limited. For football games, a free shuttle is available from campus to the stadium. A shuttle is provided for select Men's Basketball home games.
Is your student a True Blue Tiger? Blue Crew is a University of Memphis student group made up of the most passionate Tiger fans on campus. If your student is loud, rowdy, and crazy about your Memphis Tigers, encourage them to join.
Multicultural Affairs
Recognizing that diversity and inclusion are key components to our students' learning experience, the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) offer a wide range of opportunities for leadership development, programs, events, scholarships, travel and guest lectures to help your student embrace the diversity around them. Additionally, OMA challenges your student to think critically and lead the way in finding solutions to society's toughest issues.
Veteran and Military Student Services
The Veterans and Military Student Services office assists veterans, service members and their families with the transition from a military environment into a positive academic community in pursuit of professional and personal development by connecting students to expert support services and tools to enhance academic and professional success.
