What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is plagiarism detection software that scans student work for matched text by comparing the work to a large database of student work, publications, and materials on the internet. The Turnitin service is available through an interface built into Canvas Learning Management System. You can also access it via turnitin.com. We suggest using it in Canvas when possible.

What is Turnitin’s A.I Writing Detection?

Turnitin's AI writing detection capability is designed to help educators identify text that might be prepared by a generative AI tool. AI writing detection should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student. It takes further scrutiny and human judgment in conjunction with an organization's application of its specific academic policies to determine whether any academic misconduct has occurred.

Why Use Turnitin?

University of Memphis students are expected not to practice academic misconduct. Turnitin is a learning technology tool that can help students meet these requirements and learn how to properly reference and cite.

How to use Turnitin in Canvas

  1. To use the Turnitin A.I. writing detection tool, first create an assignment in Canvas that uses Turnitin.
  2. Once you’ve created an assignment, allow your students to submit to that assignment.
  3. When they are done, go to the assignment and select Speedgrader.
  4. In Speedgrader, find the Turnitin originality score. It will be a percentage number in a colored box right next to the file name that the students submitted.
  5. Select the Turnitin originality score and it will take you to the Turnitin Feedback Studio. In the right-side navigation of the Feedback Studio, you’ll see a box that says A.I.  That is the A.I. writing detection score. If you click it, it will give you more information.
