Groups

In Course Navigation, click the People link. Click the Add Group Set button. Add a Group Set Name. Select whether you would like to allow self sign-up. Make sure the Create groups later option is selected from the Group Structure drop-down menu. Then click the Save button. To add Groups to the Group Set, Click the Add Group button. Name the group by typing in the Group Name field. If you want to limit groups to a specific size, enter the maximum number of group members in the Group Membership Limit field. Click the Save button. To create another group, click the Add Group button. You can create as many groups as you need.  To learn more, click here.

In Course Navigation, click the People link. Click the Add Group Set button. Name your new group by typing in the Group Set Name field. To split students into a number of equal groups, select Split students by [number] of groups from the drop-down menu. To create groups with a certain number of students, select Split [number] of students per group from the drop-down menu. Then use the arrows or type the number of students per group in the dialog box. To require group members to be in the same section, click the Require group members to be in the same section checkbox. In Course Navigation, click the Settings link. Click the Course Details tab. Click the more options link. To allow students to create their own student groups, select the Let students organize their own groups checkbox. Click the Update Course Details button. In Couse Navigation, click the People link. You can add a group leader as part of a group set. To create a new group set, click the Add Group Set button. You can automatically assign group leaders when creating a new group set when: 

In the Leadership section, click the Automatically assign a student group leader checkbox . Then select the radio button for your assignment preference:

  • Set first student to join as group leader. This option tells Canvas to assign the first student who joins the group as the group leader.
  • Set a random student as group leader. This option tells Canvas to choose a student randomly.

To add a leader in an individual group, click the name of a group set. Expand the group where you want to add a group leader. Locate the student name and click the user Options icon. Select the Set as Leader link. For more on assigning a student leader to a group, click here.
