Canvas Roles and Permissions
This page provides details about the roles and permissions available for users within the UofM Canvas environment. These roles are managed by the Registrar's Office and UM3D. Please note that some roles will require FERPA training before accessing a course in Canvas.
Faculty/Staff Roles

Teacher
|
This role includes full course access, such as managing content, assignments, and
grades. It is administered by the Registrar's office and can only be assigned by your
department scheduler.

Enrollment is automatic through Banner (myMemphis). If you are not listed as a Teacher
in a course, please contact your department scheduler or your department chair/dean.

Faculty Guest
|
This role grants faculty members read-only access to a course. Users cannot edit or
modify the course content. This role can be utilized for guest faculty from other
institutions to participate in a course.

To be added as a faculty guest, please submit a ticket through the UM Helpdesk.
|
Course Coordinator (Temporary)
|
This role grants faculty and staff members temporary access (up to 3 weeks) to edit
and assist with course content. While users can modify course materials, they cannot
view any student information, including grades and class lists.

To be added as an Online Coordinator please submit a ticket through the UM Helpdesk.
|
Embedded Librarian
|
This role grants a UofM Librarian to your course. Your embedded librarian can help
you integrate research materials, provide instruction (synchronous or asynchronous),
or participate in class and/or research discussions.

To be added as an Embedded librarian submit a ticket with via the umhelpdesk.

Student Roles

Student
|
This role provides full course access to students. It allows users to submit assignments,
participate in discussions, and view content. This role is managed by the registration
within (myMemphis).

None, enrollment is automatically processed through registration in myMemphis.
|
Student Tutor
|
This role is similar to the student role and has only limited access to view content
and assist with discussions.
|
This request must come from the faculty of record/teacher of the course. For a student
tutor be added submit a ticket with umhelpldesk.
|
Student (Inactive)
|
Inactive enrollments are students previously enrolled in a course but who can no longer
access course content.

TA/GA/Secondary Faculty
