Spring Awakening
A Rock Musical
Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater
Music by Duncan Sheik
Based on the play by Frank Wedekind
April 13-15, 20-22, 2017
The University of Memphis will close the 2016-2017 season with Spring Awakening, music
by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Spring Awakening is based on
the Frank Wedekind play of the same name, which was originally banned in Germany for
its frank portrayal of sexuality, abortion, rape, and homosexuality. Performances
run April 13-15 and 20-22, Thursday to Saturday at 7:30pm.
Spring Awakening tells the story of 19th century German adolescents as they grapple
with their burgeoning sexuality in a time of great sexual oppression. The musical
calls upon its rock score to accentuate the inner turmoil boiling within these adolescents.
Given the current social climate, the themes of Spring Awakening have never been more
relevant.
Viewer discretion is advised due to the subject matter and language.
Springs Awakening is directed by Stephen Hancock (Artistic Director of the Department
of Theatre & Dance), with musical direction by Jacob Allen (Theatre Professor and
head of the musical theatre concentration), and choreography by Jill Guyton Nee (Dance
Professor and head of the dance concentration). Junior Grace Gibbons (Oklahoma!) plays
the innocent and curious Wendla Bergmann. Opposite of her is Landon Ricker (Next to
Normal, Oklahoma!) playing the rebellious and free-thinking Melchior Gabor. Senior
Cody Rutledge (Little Shop of Horrors) plays the troubled Mortiz Stiefel. Also featured
is Jordan Hartwell (A Flea in Her Ear) and Naivell Steib (Anonymous) who play the
adults.
