Graduate Advising

The Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership (ICL) and the Office of Teacher Education and Clinical Practice (OTECP) offer two master's programs: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree and the Master of Science (MS) degree in School Library Information Specialist. Both are master's degrees and teacher licensure programs all in one. An individual may not seek teacher licensure at the University of Memphis unless they have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA from an accredited institution. Students are cautioned not to enroll in graduate coursework if they do not meet this standard because tuition cannot be refunded.

Get started:

  • Attend one of the information meetings.
  • Contact ICL Graduate Advisor, LaRuth Lofties, to set up an appointment.
  • Apply to the Graduate School as either non-degree seeking or degree seeking.
  • Apply to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) as soon as you get admitted as either non-degree or degree seeking.
    • An individual may not seek teacher licensure at the University of Memphis unless they have a 2.75 undergraduate GPA from an accredited institution.

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program leads toward a master’s degree and a Tennessee teaching license. For candidates that hold a master’s or doctorate, you may enroll as a Graduate Non-Degree seeking student. Apply for Graduate Admissions here>

Degree Information

2.75 and up GPA Requirements:

  • Candidates are not required to take the Praxis exam for entrance into the MAT program.

2.5-2.74 GPA Requirements:

  • You must take and pass the Praxis CORE Academics Skills for Educators (CORE) Writing Exam with a score of 162.
  • You must obtain a 3.0 GPA on the first semester of MAT coursework and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program. 

2.25-2.49 GPA Requirements:

  • You must take and pass the Praxis CORE Academics Skills for Educators (CORE) Writing Exam with a score of 162.
  • Submit the EDA recommendation form > completed by a former instructor or employer.
  • You must obtain a 3.0 GPA on the first semester of MAT coursework and maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program.

The SLIS Program in the College of Education leads candidates to a Master of Science (MS) degree with initial licensure and a Tennessee License to teach grades K-12.
