Telehealth and Teletherapy Resources

Due to the massive impact the novel coronavirus pandemic has had on our daily lives, more fields are now relying on remote service options such as telehealth and teletherapy. The School of Social Work offers these resources to our students, faculty, and community partners for ease of transition in to this relatively new model of service.

Tele-behavioral Health Research, Training, and Treatment Program

In June 2020, Dr. Susan Elswick received funding from the Urban Child Institute and The University of Memphis Institute for Interdisciplinary Memphis Partnerships to Advance Community Transformation (iIMPACT) to develop a tele-behavioral health training and treatment program for the region due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health service delivery in the region. With this seed funding, Dr. Elswick launched the Tele-behavioral Health Research, Training, and Treatment program.

The University of Memphis School of Social Work Tele-behavioral Health Research, Training, and Treatment Program aims to provide training on best practices in tele-behavioral health, develop opportunities to research the use of technology in practice, and provide direct services to the states most vulnerable populations.

Tennessee Telehealth Guidelines

In Tennessee, telehealth practice (the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support and promote long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration) is subject to the same standards as traditional practice. The social worker must comply with guidelines for the locations of the social worker and the client. The social worker must accurately represent themselves and practice within their competencies. Informed consent must be expanded to address additional risks of using technology.

Person Centered Tech recently hosted a series of webinars around telehealth as it relates to support during the coronavirus pandemic. You can find replays of the webinars as well as supporting materials at this link.

The Health Resources and Services Administration has funded the Telehealth Resources Center. This is a federally funded center that hosts tons of resources, from articles, to webinars, to podcasts.
