Yes! Our camps are set up to accommodate a variety of different experience levels. No matter your child’s musical history, they’re sure to learn new things and have a great time. Our camp leaders are experts at building on a child's strengths and incorporating many skills into the performances. When you sign up, you will have the opportunity to tell us all about your child's unique skill set and interests. We will keep these interests in mind wherever possible.
- Choir Camp: rising 7 - 12th grades
- Band + Orchestra Camp: rising 7 - 12th grades

Please list the instrument/voice that represents your highest level of proficiency at registration. Only in a very rare instance would you play in more than one ensemble. This excludes woodwinds and brass who may have to play in both band and orchestra, depending on the instrumentation of each ensemble. However, several small ensembles meet and rehearse with one another for evening performances at camp.
Except for piano and large percussion (keyboards, timpani, etc.), Summer at the Scheidt does not provide instruments. Students need to bring their instruments and amplifiers each day of the camp.
We are happy to provide references for local music shops that offer rentals during camp weeks if you do not already have an instrument to use.
Depending on the session, campers will have the ability to select electives to expand their musical experience.

The safety and security of every student is very important to us. All camp staff have completed background checks per the University of Memphis policy.
All camp staff members are current undergraduates, graduate students, employees/staff at the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, or teaching professionals. Every member of the camp staff undergoes special training for working with minors, including training for mandatory reporting of child abuse.
Our staff will review all registration/health forms. The camp’s staff will dispense prescriptions or necessary routine medications. Children’s acetaminophen, antihistamines (Claritin or Benadryl), throat lozenges and acid reducers (Tums) will be administered under the direction of the camp’s healthcare staff. Prompt attention is given to any accident or injury. Parents are notified immediately if a problem is serious or if outside assistance is required.
Camp parents are not permitted to observe their campers during camp hours as staff are concentrating on the campers and cannot escort visitors. Please do not ask for exceptions.
If your child is sick, or has had a fever in the past 24 hours, please do not bring your child to camp. We cannot pro-rate session fees for campers who miss camp time due to being sick.
In addition, please check your camper for lice before coming to camp on Monday.
Summer at the Scheidt is for campers who want to be here. A camper not following the rules and guidelines of the camp demonstrates that they may not want to be here.
For a first offense, a warning is given; for a second offense, parents are called; and for a third offense, the camper may be asked to leave.
If a camper is a resident and is asked to leave, the parents/guardians will be held financially responsible for all transportation costs. No tuition refunds will be given, full or partial.
Our camp leaders are professional music educators with plenty of experience working with groups of children. In addition to School of Music faculty, we have camp staff and assistants as needed to give campers the best possible experience.
Campers are supervised at all times, and the camp follows the University of Memphis guidelines for an adult-to-student ratio:
- ages 6-8 is 1:8
- ages 9-14 is 1:8
- ages 15-17 is 1:10
Camp Directors:

Yes and no. Campers may bring their cell phone to camp and use them before and after daily activities. Once activities begin, cell phones should be turned off and stored in the student's bag.
Cell phones are not permitted during camp courses and ensemble rehearsals. If your child has a problem at camp, they should immediately tell a counselor.
Summer at the Scheidt will not be responsible for cell phones and other valuables.
TECHNOLOGY POLICY
Summer at the Scheidt’s goal is to provide an environment where new friendships can
blossom and each camper has a unique and special musical experience. Portable music
players, video games, computers and cell phones should not be brought to camp because
they distract campers from the community-building and social components of camp. Furthermore,
cell phones especially interrupt the camp in various ways, namely our ability to build
community and enhance your camper’s confidence in being away from home, both parts
of our camp’s goals. If any of the items listed above are brought from home, the camp
staff will collect them and return them at the end of the day/session.
If you have any questions about your camper or the camp experience, please contact the camp office at 901.678.BAND.
