ResNet FAQ

Where can I find assistance connecting to ResNet?

All students living on main campus and on South campus (Shirley C. Raines Centennial Place, Living Learning Complex, Rawls, Smith, South, Carpenter Complex, Park Ave. Apartments, and Graduate and Student Family Housing) have access to free support from our ResNet Service Center located in Shirley C. Raines Centennial Place Room 135, Monday – Friday, 8-4:30. 901-678-4042. I'm an incoming freshman.

Is ResNet available off campus?

No. Buildings off campus are not a part of the University and are not connected to ResNet. ResNet service is only available to residents.

Are there any fees for ResNet?

The University does not charge any extra fees for residents to use ResNet. There is no charge for use of ResNet support. The only cost to the student is for the necessary hardware and software you may need and ResNet does not sell.

Is there a bandwidth cap on ResNet?

There is a 100 Mbps outbound bandwidth cap to the Internet. Traffic inbound from the Internet and within campus is unrestricted. (Prior to instituting the outbound cap, we were regularly getting into a partial denial of service situation for many University of Memphis services being accessed from off campus.)

Why will my computer not connect to the UM Network?

When attempting to connect to the UM Network please ensure you are using your correct UUID and password. If you have recently changed your password you will need to go into the wireless settings and select forget/delete the UM network. At times your computer will save your previous password. After you've selected forge/delete network, attempt to connect again with your UUID and your new password.

How do I connect my gaming console (i.e. Xbox, PlayStation, etc.) or Smart TV to the Wi-Fi?

Most devices are automatically identified and allowed to connect on the um-devices network. Some Smart TVs may ask you to agree to terms, you can go ahead and agree to those terms.

At times the connection may fail. In the event that happens,  students can contact resnet@memphis.edu to provide our team with the MAC address to add your device directly to the network

What should I do if my connected device is no longer working on UM-Devices?

We'd recommend you disconnect your device completely from the um-devices network, unplug your device, plug it back in and then reconnect back to the um-devices network.

Why is my Chromebook, Linux, Android having issues connecting to the Network?

We'd suggest you review the settings in your network connection. Make sure the EAP method is on PEAP, Phase 2 authentication is set to none and the CA certificate is set to do not validate.

Why won't my router, FitBit Versa, Google Home, etc. connect to one of the University networks?

These are examples of several devices that are either not permitted or not compatible on the University network. Some of these devices, such as routers, can cause network interference.

What are the networking speeds in ResNet?

Networks Services provides the infrastructure for our Residential Housing and reports: Wireless: 802.11a/g: 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, 54 Mbps, 802.11n: 6.5 to 300 Mbps, 802.11 ac up to 300Mbps. There will be two 100BASE-T Ethernet Network interfaces.

I live at Carpenter Complex, why can't I access the Ethernet Hardwire?

Most units are Carpenter are wireless accessible only. The only units with accessible ethernet and Wi-Fi capabilities are 237, 241, and 233 Learning Way.  If there are ports in your unit, those are legacy ports and are no longer active.

Do I need my own printer or is network printing available?

Students are absolutely able to have a printer in their own room. Additionally, in certain residence halls there are iPrint printers available to allow printing from your room. The printers are located in the front lobby entrances.

How can I set up my personal printer to the network?

Students are able to set up their personal printers to the um-devices network, just like gaming consoles. If students have an issues with connecting their printers, they can contact resnet@memphis.edu with their printer's MAC address and we can support them by registering it on the network.

Will I be kicked off line every time the IP address is renewed via DHCP?

No. The IP address should renew automatically without any interruption in service. So, you can virtually stay online 24 hours per day. You may have this trouble if it is a laptop that has gone into "hibernation". When the laptop shuts down its Ethernet interface for long enough (past the 6 hour lease lifetime), when it wakes up it disables TCP/IP until it can re-establish a new lease. You should contact ResNet Support at 678-4042 if you have trouble with this.

What is the University's stance on downloading or uploading copyrighted materials?

The University of Memphis does not consider downloading and uploading copyrighted material acceptable use.

Can I set up my mail server to use an email client and IMAP to send and receive mail while on the University of Memphis Campus via port 25?

No. Traffic on port 25 is limited to incoming mail and will not allow outgoing. This is to keep the IP ranges of the University from being blocked by outside IP providers. This is a security issue in our public internet. IMAP is not generally used on campus. The best solution is to use a web interface to access your non-University email account, or forward your personal account to your memphis.edu email address.

How do I program my digital TV to receive all the University channels?

It is important to perform a channel scan on your television to ensure you are viewing all the available analog and digital channels. Exact details on how to auto program or auto tune digital TVs vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model. For best results, refer to the owner's manual. Most TVs will take between 20-45 minutes to complete this function.

Using the TV's remote control, follow these general steps:

Step 1: Press the "Power" button to turn on the TV
Step 2: Press the "Menu" Button
Step 3: Select "Set-Up"
Step 4: Select "Antenna" then "Cable"
Step 5: Select "Auto Program/Auto Tune/Channel scan" then "OK"

If you have tried this set up and still not able to find any channels, you may not have a TV that has the QAM digital tuner.

Why is my TV not getting all/any of the University channels?

To troubleshoot please: 1. Confirm your TV is QAM digital ready. 2. You are using a coax cable to connect to the wall outlet in your room. 3. With those items complete you can next run the setup program to load the channels; this can take between 20-45 minutes depending on your TV. Why am I receiving a NAT error when I try to play computer/video games?

There is not an option in the University's firewall to control Network Address Translation (NAT). "Moderate" NAT and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) are only features of home routers, not enterprise networks. The um-devices network is only provided to students as an "as is" network. While we work to provide students with Internet connectivity we cannot guarantee that all games will be compatible or fully function with the network provided.

Where can I find the Computer Usage Policy?

The University of Memphis has an Acceptable Use Policy for computer usage. Please read before using ResNet.
