PH-IDEAS participates in the Global Model WHO (GMWHO) Conference in Geneva, Switzerland

Overview
The inaugural in-person Global Model WHO (GMWHO) Conference was held from October 29 to November 1, 2024, in Geneva, Switzerland. Jointly organized by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), this year's GMWHO Conference provided a unique experiential learning opportunity for seniors enrolled in the Fall 2024 Public Health in Action course.
Organizers
The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening and enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations through advocacy for international cooperation and strategic collaboration. The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations focused on international public health, aiming to promote health, ensure global safety, and serve vulnerable populations through partnerships with countries, stakeholders, and other partners.
Purpose
The GMWHO Conference simulates the proceedings of the World Health Assembly, offering students the chance to collaborate and address current global health issues. The conference aims to enhance students' skills in negotiation, advocacy, leadership, and consensus-building.
Participants
Eight students from two high schools participated:
- Five junior students from University High School in Memphis, TN
- Three senior students from White Station High School in Memphis, TN
Committees and Focus Areas
Each student represented a different country, conducting extensive research and engaging in simulated diplomatic negotiations to build consensus and draft resolutions with recommendations to assist all populations, especially the most vulnerable. They were divided into three committees, each focusing on a distinct global health issue:
- Committee A1: Climate Change, Pollution, and Health
- Committee A2: Mental Health and Youth
- Committee A3: Global Health and Peace Initiative
Achievements
On the final day of the conference, students received Certificates of Participation, recognizing their hard work and efforts to reach consensus on critical global health issues.
Conclusion
The Global Model WHO Conference provided a unique and valuable experience for students, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of international health diplomacy and the functioning of the UN. The skills and knowledge acquired during this event will undoubtedly benefit their future endeavors in public health and international relations.
