BA in Psychology

The BA is a great route for students who hope to work with the public but do not wish to pursue a career in a medical area or doctoral-level psychology field. The BA’s training in a world language will give students an additional skill for their resumes.

BA in Psychology students complete 39 psychology hours (12 hours in core Psychology courses as well as one course from each of the three following broad areas: cognitive/physiological psychology; social/developmental psychology; applied psychology). Students also choose 18 additional hours in the field to tailor their degree to their personal goals. BA students also complete between 6 and 12 hours of a world language. BS in Psychology

The BS is perfect for students who wish to continue on to a professional health program (e.g., Physical Therapy School, Occupational Therapy School, Medical School) or a doctoral program in Psychology (e.g., PhD in Clinical, Experimental, School,or Counseling Psychology). This degree is also a good route for psychology students who enjoy STEM fields.

BS in Psychology students complete 39 psychology hours (12 hours in core Psychology courses as well as one course from each of the three following broad areas:  cognitive/physiological psychology; social/developmental psychology; applied psychology). Students also choose 18 additional hours in the field to tailor their degree to their personal goals. For the BS degree, these students choose 12 additional hours from any of the following STEM areas: Cognitive/Physiological Psychology, Psychology Research, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Science, Health Sciences, Institute for Intelligent Systems, Math, or Physics. BA or BS in Psychology with a Behavioral Neuroscience Concentration

Behavioral neuroscience studies the biological basis of behavior and cognition. The University of Memphis faculty in this area study the neurophysiology of drug and alcohol addiction, genetic basis of behavior, neural substrates of spatial and non-spatial memory, executive function, and motivation. Faculty explore these areas using experimental analysis of animal behavior, in vivo and in vitro neurochemical and electrophysiological measures, and psychopharmacological interventions. 

Behavioral Neuroscience students complete the same psychology curriculum as the regular BA or BS in psychology. However, their choices of courses in the broad areas of psychology, as well as some of their elective courses, are related to Behavioral Neuroscience. 

BA or BS in Psychology with Cognitive Science Concentration

Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, combining fields such as Cognitive Psychology, Artificial Intelligence, and Linguistics. Cognitive Science students complete the same psychology curriculum as the regular BA or BS in psychology. However, their choices of courses in the broad areas of psychology as well as some of their elective courses are related to Cognitive Science.
