PGSA Initiatives

The PGSA offers several opportunities to support graduate student training, research and networking. The following resources include funding awards allocated by both the PGSA and other university bodies.

Travel Funding

One way the PGSA supports its members is by reimbursing travel expenses for attending and/or presenting at a research conference. To aid in our efforts, the department generously budgets $20,000 for these awards and have supported this initiative since its establishment.

This year, we have received a $20,000 donation from our new Chair of Excellence, Dr. Jim Murphy, to support professional development opportunities for graduate student success. We are greatly appreciative of this because it allows us to increase the financial support offered by our travel awards this year.

Overview of Funding Process:

  1. We request students to submit an application, by the Fall deadline, indicating their intent to present during the fall, spring, and/or summer terms of this academic year. With these responses, we can estimate the awards for each recipient and provide more support than in recent years.
  2. Students can add, modify, or remove their applications at any time by resubmitting a new form before the deadline associated with each semester (Fall: 9/7; Spring: 2/1; Summer:4/26). Please submit one application for each conference you plan to attend.
  3. We will contact each semester's applicants after each deadline. That email will have the necessary documents and instructions for reimbursement of travel expenses. Applicants must respond with the signed agreement (which will be included in the email attachments) to formally accept the travel award.

The Psychology Graduate Enrichment Fund

This fund is tailored to provide comprehensive support for a wide array of educational activities and unexpected financial needs. This Includes, but is not limited to, conference/presentation stipends, research support, and additional stipend compensation.

This gift of $20,000 is provided by Dr. Edward T. Gardner and facilitated by Dr. Frank Andrasik. These funds provide support for our Pathfinder Initiative.

The Pathfinder Fellowship: Provides funding that allows graduate students to explore research interests that may not be covered by pre-existing resources or funding.

Pathfinder Symposium: This event enriches our department and student community by creating a space to share research, discuss ideas, and network. All graduate and undergraduate researchers in psychology are invited to present their research as part of the Department’s New Years celebration.

The River Fund Committee

The River Fund is a fund established by Dr. Neil E. Aronov and his wife, Mrs. Mary L. Aronov through the University of Memphis Foundation. The fund is intended to support the training of Doctoral Students in a healthcare delivery tract and is open to both Clinical Psychology and School Psychology doctoral students.

The River Fund Committee is responsible for coordinating clinical workshops and for allocating student funding to support student access to relevant external clinical training opportunities. This funding is available for students to attend any workshops, trainings, etc. that are clinical in nature.
