On October 10, 2024, the Loewenberg College of Nursing (LCON), led by Dr. Linda Haddad, in collaboration with Dr. Leanne Lefler, the William A. & Ruth F. Loewenberg Endowed Chair of Excellence, is proud to launch the Distinguished Lecture Series. This series is designed to engage the public with prominent scholars in nursing and health sciences, reflecting LCON's commitment to inspiring future nursing leaders and strengthening partnerships with both the University of Memphis and the Memphis Health System.
Dr. Leanne Lefler emphasized the significance of this series, stating, “Advancing health equity is central to the mission of the Loewenberg College of Nursing. It is imperative that we engage our community health leaders by providing national experts, like Dr. Sullivan-Marx, to shift mindsets and envision new opportunities to improve the health of our global community.” Dr. Lefler’s leadership in curating this series underscores LCON’s ongoing commitment to education, service, and innovation in nursing.
The Distinguished Lecture Series seeks to elevate the impact of LCON by connecting attendees with groundbreaking research and innovations in healthcare. Each lecture will feature national experts who will present on current trends, challenges, and advancements in nursing and health science. Attendees will not only benefit from insightful discussions but will also explore the latest scientific developments shaping the future of nursing. This initiative is set to foster meaningful dialogue, enrich educational experiences, and encourage community engagement in health sciences.
Dean Haddad stated, “The Distinguished Lecture Series is vital for promoting forward-thinking approaches in nursing education and practice. By connecting our students, faculty, and community with thought leaders like Dr. Sullivan-Marx, we are creating a bridge between academic excellence and real-world healthcare impact. This series will not only inspire but also empower us to tackle the pressing health challenges of today and tomorrow.”
The inaugural lecture featured Dr. Eileen M. Sullivan-Marx, past dean of the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and immediate past president of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Sullivan-Marx presented her lecture entitled “Advancing Health Equity: Connecting the Dots for Nursing Practice, Policy, & Research.” With her extensive experience in shaping health policy and nursing practice, Dr. Sullivan-Marx provided critical insights into how nursing professionals can advance the nation's goals for improving health equity through practice, policy, and research.
LCON encourages all students, faculty, healthcare professionals, and community members to plan to attend future events to actively engage in shaping the future of healthcare and nursing. This ongoing lecture series offers a unique opportunity to gain invaluable insights from a national leader in health equity, empowering attendees to apply cutting-edge research and innovative practices in their own fields. As we launch the Distinguished Lecture Series, we invite you to be a part of this enriching experience and stay tuned for announcements on the next lecture, where we will continue to explore key issues shaping the nursing profession and healthcare as a whole.
