Student Nurses' Association (SNA)

The LCON supports chapters of the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) at both the Memphis and Lambuth Campuses. Founded in 1952, the NSNA is a nonprofit organization affiliated with the American Nurses Association whose aim is to foster the professional development of undergraduate and graduate nursing students. NSNA's stated mission is "to mentor students preparing for initial licensure as registered nurses, and to convey the standards, ethics, and skills that students will need as responsible and accountable leaders and members of the profession."

The Student Nurses' Association chapter here at LCON seeks to support nursing students by providing mentorship, resources, activities, and leadership opportunities to assist in their academic careers and beyond.

SNA Activities & Events

The SNA sponsors many annually activities and events, some of which include:

Student Mentor/Mentee program: New SNA members are paired with upper-level students who offer help preparing for and navigating through nursing school

Open Meetings/Mixers: Throughout the semester, the SNA hosts meetings for students. These meetings help students to stay updated on SNA events, as well as meet with other students and LCON faculty members.

Career Fair: Employers from local healthcare organizations and education experts are invited to meet with students each semester at the Memphis campus to discuss nurse residency and employment opportunities.

Leadership Opportunities: By joining the SNA, you become eligible to serve in various leadership roles. These may include: serving as a Semester Representative for the SNA, running for SNA Board positions, and membership on various SNA committees as needs arise. Additionally, SNA members have also been called upon to serve as student representatives on LCON Faculty Committees.

Prospective Student Tours: SNA members have opportunities to assist prospective students and their families during tours of the nursing building and demonstrate patient care procedures in the simulation lab. SNA members have also been asked to speak or serve as student panel members during "pre-nursing" student classes and events.

Community Outreach/Volunteer Opportunities: SNA participates in many local health fairs and community health screenings throughout the Mid-South.

Fundraisers/Giving: The SNA also looks for ways to give back to charitable causes in our area and across the nation. In 2015, the SNA raised over $500 worth of "grab and go" food items to the FedEx Family House Pantry. More recently, in 2016 the SNA raised over $300 to give to "Flint Kids", which helped children affected by the water crisis in Flint, MI.

Angel Tree: Each year the SNA donates presents and meals to a family during Christmas. Members shop for presents and deliver them to the family.

David Santucci Memorial Scholarship: Every year at the LCON Convocation and Pinning ceremony, SNA presents one member with the $250 scholarship in honor former LSON graduate, David Santucci. The award is used to pay for the National Council Licensure Examination (or NCLEX) fee.

Sponsored Activities: In the past SNA has sponsored many activities like the U of M Campus Midday Moves, Night Out at the Ballpark with the Memphis Redbirds, and attended Memphis Grizzlies games! Our board members are continually exploring ideas for activities to provide for members, so be on the look-out for announcements!

Graduation Chords: SNA Members are distinguished at the Pinning and Convocation ceremonies by wearing special chords.
