Helen B. Mitchell DNP, APRN, FNP-BC
Clinical Associate Professor
Professional Overview
Dr. Helen Mitchell serves as an instructor within the LCON MSN Family Nurse Practitioner program. Within this role, she adeptly oversees the coordination of the Advanced Pharmacology didactic and Residency clinical courses. A distinguished Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) and dedicated educator, Dr. Mitchell's passion resides in imparting comprehensive healthcare knowledge to a wide audience.
Her guiding philosophy is centered around the equation of knowledge and wisdom leading to understanding. In her view, true understanding emerges when one not only comprehends the knowledge (the "why") but also learns to effectively apply it to decision-making (the "how"), resulting in the acquisition of wisdom.
Boasting a wealth of experience, Dr. Mitchell holds board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner, with a remarkable track record spanning over 29 years across diverse healthcare specialties. From acute care and adult health to chronic disease management, community/population health, emergency medicine, family practice, and primary care, her professional journey has been truly comprehensive. However, her most rewarding pursuit lies in serving and addressing the needs of patients within underserved populations.
Engaged in multiple professional memberships, including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, American Nurses Association, National Black Nurse Practitioners Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and Tennessee Nurses Association, Dr. Mitchell extends her influence as a mentor to BSN, MSN, and DNP nurses and students. Notably, she also holds certification as an American Heart Association Certified Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instructor. Her commitment to education, mentorship, and healthcare makes her a truly remarkable and influential figure within the field.
