Biography

Musicologist Ewelina Boczkowska’s scholarship explores the expressive relationships between music, trauma, and memory, spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her publications focus on the work of émigré composers such as Chopin and WWII exile Jerzy Fitelberg, as well as film music.  Her work has appeared in numerous edited collections and prestigious journals, including 19th-Century Music and Roczniki Humanistyczne. She has presented at conferences across North America and Europe, including the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society. Notably, she served as a visiting research fellow at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden in 2019 and as a research fellow at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in 2021.

Dr. Boczkowska has made significant contributions to the field of film music and European cinema. She co-edited, with Michael Baumgartner, Music, Collective Memory, Nostalgia, and Trauma in European Cinema after the Second World War (2020) and Music, Authorship, Narration, and Art Cinema in Europe: 1940s to 1980s (2022). Additionally, she serves as a co-editor for the Routledge series Music and Sound on the International Screen.

Recognized for her excellence in teaching, she offers courses in art and popular music traditions. She encourages her students to historically contextualize their creative practices within broader arts and cultural contexts.

Before joining the University of Memphis, Dr. Boczkowska held the position of Distinguished Professor at Youngstown State University. She earned her PhD in Musicology from University of California, Los Angeles, and graduated magna cum laude with a BM in Music History from McGill University.
