Music Education Admission Requirements

B.M. in Music Education

  • Music Education Majors are required to complete a supplemental essay or video.
    • Your essay should be about 500 words long, and answer the following questions: 
      • Why do you want to be a music educator?
      • Who or what may have inspired your decision to become a music educator?
      • What specific skills and/or personality traits do you possess that may contribute to your success as a music educator?
    • Alternatively, students may record a 2–3-minute video to answer these questions and copy a YouTube, Dropbox, or Google Drive link directly into their application. 
  • Music Education applicants are required to submit one letter of recommendation with their application.
  • Audition: Undergraduate Music Education applicants are required to audition on a primary instrument. Review the audition requirements for your instrument/voice here

Online M.M. in Music Education (traditional or Orff)

  • A writing sample - A thesis, term paper, or other example of academic writing.
  • A teaching philosophy statement (1-2 pages).
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Names and email addresses of two recommenders.
  • Proof of current teacher licensure in music (optional). Alternatively, applicants may submit a statement that articulates where they are in the certification process.  

Ph.D. in Music Education

  • A minimum of two years P-12 teaching experience is required.
  • A writing sample - A thesis, term paper, or other example of academic writing.
  • A teaching philosophy statement (1-2 pages).
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Names and email addresses of two recommenders.
  • Proof of current teacher licensure in music (optional).
  • Finalists will be asked to participate in a brief interview with music education faculty members. This interview may occur on campus or remotely.
