Why pursue Performance at the UofM?

As a performance major, your primary focus will be the mastery of your primary instrument. Rooted in the Western Classical music tradition you’ll have the chance to participate in a variety of ensembles, including orchestra, opera, and classical chamber music.

Throughout your studies, you will be guided by your major teacher, who will act as your mentor and gateway to future professional opportunities. As a part of the degree requirement, you will get the opportunity to perform several recitals. Along with these recital opportunities, you will get the chance to work closely with your fellow students in a studio setting. Throughout the year each department invites professionals from around the world to workshop with their students in masterclass settings, giving you the opportunity to improve your knowledge either through observing or participating in the masterclasses.

You will also have the opportunity to perform with a variety of ensembles throughout your time at the University of Memphis. This includes ensembles located at the school, as well as professional groups within the Memphis community, such as Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Opera Memphis.

The Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music offers the performance degree for Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral students.
