Plenary Talks & Lecture Series
The Faculty of the Department of Mathematical Sciences is actively involved in cutting edge research in the mathematical sciences. This is reflected by the several high-visibility, invited talks and course-lectures presented worldwide. Some of the key-note talks and lectures recently delivered/to be soon delivered by the DMS Faculty are listed below.
- Prof. George Anastassiou was one of the plenary speakers at the 8th International Conference on Approximation Theory - Special Functions (ATSF2024), held September 4-7, 2024, in Ankara, Türkiye. He presented on "Multivariate Perturbed Hyperbolic Tangent Activated Singular Integrals Approximation" and "Approximation by Parametrized Logistic Activated Convolution Type Operators." The conference featured 204 participants from various countries, with 170 talks given. This conference was dedicated to the valuable contributions to mathematics of our esteemed colleague Prof. George Anastassiou and to his upcoming retirement years.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of the 9 plenary speakers On weak/strong attractors for a 3-D Structural Acoustic Interaction with Kirchhoff-Boussinesq Interface. At the 11th Conference on Applied Mathematics Appl Math22, 5-9 September 2022, Birunji, Croatia.

- Irena Lasiecka gave a Laureate Lecture on the occasion of receiving the Hugo Steinhaus Award by the Polish Society of Mathematics, Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, 2-3 June 2022.
- Irena Lasiecka is one of the four plenary speakers at the 40th SEARCDE Conference [Southheastern-Atlantic Conference on Differential Equations], NC State University, 12-13, November 2022.

- George Anastassiou gave a lecture at INI/University of Cambridge/UK on February 28th, 2022. His lecture was on Approximation by Algebraic Neural Networks.
- George Anastassiou of the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the University of Memphis gave his first one-hour lecture at Cambridge University/Isaac Newton Institute in the seminar of "Fractional Differential Equations-2".
- George Anastassiou was a keynote speaker at the INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND ENGINEERING held on January 21-23, 2022 at Biruni University, Istanbul, Turkey. His talk was entitled: Abstract Bivariate Left Fractional Pseudo-Polynomial Monotone Constrained Approximation with applications. Also this conference honored George Anastassiou for his 70th birthday.
- Irena Lasiecka gave a memorial A.V. Balakrishnan lecture “How to control flutter in a flow-structure interaction” at the 4th International Conference on Recent Advances in Mathematical Sciences and Applications. - Roberto Triggiani presented an invited lecture at the International Symposium on Frontier Issues of Mathematics Theory of Nonlinear Systems program at Henan Normal University, in Henan Province on December 11th 2021.His titled talk was: Uniform stabilization of the Boussinesq system in Besov spaces of low regularity by a localized, finite dimensional pair {boundary, interior} of feedback controllers.
- Irena Lasiecka presented an invited lecture at the International Symposium on Frontier Issues of Mathematics Theory of Nonlinear Systems program at Henan Normal University, in Henan Province on December 11th, 2021. Her titled talk was: Analysis and Control of Jordan-Moore-Gibson-Thompson-Dynamics.
- José Rodrigues presented an invited lecture at the PDE & Applied math seminar on November 24th, 2021 at the math department University of California,Riverside. He gave a talk entitled: "On the attractors for a nonlinear wave equation with critical exponents".

- Irena Lasiecka presented plenary lecture at the XII Forum of Partial Differential Equations September 19-25 , 2021 at the Polish Academy Center Bedlewo. The title of her talk : “Long time behavior in flow structure interactions.”. See the link
- Irena Lasiecka was one of the five main lecturers at the Summer School “Fluids under Control”, held by Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague August 23-27,2021. She gave a series of 4 lectures under the title” Mathematical Theory of Fluid/Flow-Structure Interactions. Analysis and Control.”
- Irena Lasiecka was one of 10 plenary speakers at IWOTA 2021 International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications, IWOTA held at Chapman University, Calif. August 9-13, 2021. She gave a 55 minutes long talk entitled: “Semigroups arising in third order in time dynamics with applications to nonlinear acoustics”.
- Roberto Triggiani was one of 5 main lecturers at the Summer School "Fluids under Control", held in Prague, Czech Republic, August 23-27, 2021, sponsored by the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Czech Technical University in Prague and the University of Pittsburgh. He gave 4 50-minute lectures on "Uniform boundary stabilization of 3D Navier-Stokes equations and 2D-3D Boussinesq systems by finite dimensional, localized, static, boundary feedback controllers in Besov spaces of low regularity".

- David Grynkiewicz was invited to give a minicourse of 5 one-hour lectures on the topic of sumsets at the Workshop on Additive Combinatorics held at the International Center for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS) in Bangalore, India. The workshop was intended for young researchers in India interested in Additive Combinatorics and ran during the last week of February and first week of March 2020.
- Jerome Goldstein attended the 39th Southeastern-Atlantic Regional Conference of Differential Equations (SEARCDE) held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univeristy on October 26-17, 2019. Dr. Goldstein served as a Plenary Speaker, presenting on "Instantaneous Blowup, Old and New Results."
- Roberto Triggiani gave a plenary talk at the XVIII Workshop on Partial Differential Equations held at the National Laboratory for Scientific Computing in Petropolis-Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from September 10-13, 2019.
- Fernanda Botelho attended the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA 2019), held July 22-26, 2019 at Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon. Dr. Botelho was co-organizer of a special session titled "Preserver Problems in Operator Theory and Functional Analysis" and was an invited speaker at the special session " Linear Operators and Function Spaces."
- Irena Lasiecka presented the Acceptance Speech for her American Automatic Control Council-International Federation of Automatic Control (AACC-IFAC) Richard Bellman's Heritage Award at the 2019 American Control Conference in Philadelphia on July 11, 2019.
- Fernanda Botelho was a co-organizer, jointly with Cristina Camara, Cristina Diogo and Dijana Ilisevic, of the Women in Operator Theory and it's Applications (WOT19) at the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon from June 17-19, 2019.

- Thomas Hagen gave an invited Mathematical Sciences Colloquium at the University of Texas at Dallas on March 29, 2019. The title of his talk was “The Winner Takes All: Volume Scavenging Populations of Networked Droplets”.
- Irena Lasiecka gave the keynote lecture at the Workshop on Fluid-Structure Interaction from March 18-20, 2019 at University of Milano, Milan, Italy.
- Thomas Hagen was one of two plenary speakers at the Annual Meeting of the Hurwitz-Gesellschaft at the Technical University Munich, Germany on February 8, 2019. His lecture was entitled “The Winner Takes All: From Microfluidics to Socioeconomics - denn Tröpfchen sind auch nur Leut”.
- Irena Lasiecka delivered one of five plenary talks at the NSF-AFOSR Workshop on Dynamics and Control held at San Juan, Puerto Rico Dec 4-8, 2018. The title of her talk was
"Mathematical theory of flutter control ". She was accompanied by two PhD students Sutthirut Charoenphon and Steven Guffey who gave 20 min long presentations on their research papers. - Béla Bollobás gave a plenary talk at the Shanghai Center for Mathematical Sciences (SCMS) at the Workshop on Extremal and Structural Graph Theory in Shanghai, China, November 30- December 2, 2018.
- Robert Kozma was a keynote speaker at the ICANN 2018 27th International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, held October 4-7, 2018, on the island of Rhodes, Greece.
- Jerry Goldstein and Roberto Triggiani were two of the six plenary speakers at the conference on Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications, held in Kazimierz Dolmy, Poland, September 30 - October 5, 2018. This conference had over 100 participants, and was dedicated to the 85th birthday of Jan Kisynski.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of the main organizers and a member of the International Scientific Program Committee for the 28th IFIP (International Federation of Information Processes) TC7 Conference on Modeling and Optimization, held at Universitat Duisberg-Essen, in Essen, Germany, July 23-27, 2018. This conference had over 250 participants. Dr. Lasiecka also organized, within this conference, a three-day mini-symposium in memory of Igor Chueshov and devoted to research in the area of fluid structure interactions.
- Gisele Goldstein had her own conference on her 60th birthday entitled Evolution Equations and PDE's organized by her colleagues in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bari, Italy. The conference featured 10 speakers: F. Altomare, G.M. Coclite, S. Lucent, R.M. Mining, and S. Romanelli from the University of Bari, G. Metafune and D. Pallara from University of Salento, C. Tacelli from University of Salerno, D. Guidetti from University of Bologna, and J. Goldstein from University of Memphis.
- Béla Bollobás was a keynote speaker at the 29th International Conference on Probabilistic, Combinatorial, and Asymptotic Methods for the Analysis of Algorithms, held at the Department of Mathematics at Uppsala University, Sweden on June 25-29, 2018.
- Jerry Goldstein and Gisele Goldstein were two of eleven invited speakers at the conference, Two Days on PDE's: Bruno Pini Centenary. This conference had over 30 participants and was organized on June 21-22, 2018, by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bologna in memory of Bruno Pini.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of six plenary speakers at the ETAMM 2018 Conference, Emerging Trends in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, held at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, June 18-22, 2018. This conference was attended by over 200 participants. The title of Dr. Lasiecka's talk was Feedback synthesis and nonstandard Riccati equations arising in optimization of ultrasound waves with high intensity focus.
- Irena Lasiecka was an invited speaker at the Special Materials and Complex Systems conference (SMACS 2018), organized by Universita di Pavia and Universita di Milano, and held at the historical Palazzo Feltrinelli in Gargnano, Italy, June 18-22, 2018.
- David Grynkiewicz was a co-organizer for a Special Session on Additive Combinatorics at the Joint International Meeting of the Chinese Mathematical Society and the American Mathematical Society (JMICA 2018), held June 11-14, 2018, at Shanghai, China.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of the three main Lecturers at the conference, Paths in Mathematical Control Theory, organized in Torino, Italy, held on February 26-27, 2018.
- David Grynkiewicz gave a plenary talk at the Conference on Rings and Factorizations (CRF 19-23 Feb 2018) at the University of Graz, Austria.
- Vladimir Nikiforov gave a plenary talk at the 2017 International Workshop on Spectral Hypergraph Theory, held at the University of Anhui, China, on November 30, 2017.
- Irena Lasiecka presented one of the seven keynote lectures at the Workshop on Dynamics, Control and Numerics for Fractional PDEs, at Hotel Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 23-25, 2017. In addition, two MSCI PhD students, Stephen Guffey and Sutthirut Charoenphon, were invited to present shorter talks.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of six plenary speakers at GPCO 2017 (the German-Polish Conference on Optimization), held at the Polish Academy of Sciences Research Station in Bedlewo, August 28 - September 1, 2017. The title of Dr. Lasiecka's lecture was "Boundary control of a three-dimensional fluid structure interaction with moving frame".
- Roberto Triggiani was one of four plenary speakers at the Second Workshop on Nonlinear PDE's in Applied Sciences, hosted by the Izmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) in Izmir, Turkey, August 8-10, 2017.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of the three organizers (along with L. de Teresa, Univ of Mexico, and K. Morris, Univ of Waterloo) of the Banff Conference: New Trends in Infinite Dimensional Control, held at Banff, Canada, July 18-21, 2017.
- Fernanda Botelho was an invited speaker at the Preservers Everywhere international conference held at the Bolyai Institute, University of Szeged, Hungary, June 19-23, 2017.
- Irena Lasiecka presented one of the four plenary lectures at the Conference 2017 Automatica (an important conference on control theory held every three years), held in Cracow, June 18-21, 2017. The lecture was entitled "How to eliminate flutter in flow structure interactions".
- Hongqiu Chen presented an invited lecture at the Sino-French Conference on Modeling, Mathematical Analysis, and Computation, June 9-12, 2017, at Xiamen University in China. This conference was in honor of Professor Claude-Michel Brauner, on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
- Jerome Goldstein was an invited speaker at the Workshop on Partial Differential Equations and Applications held at the University of Bologna, Italy, May 15-19, 2017. His talk was titled "The Cox-Ingersoll-Ross semigroup for growing initial data".
- Jerome Goldstein was an invited speaker at the Third International Conference on Probability and Analysis at the Banach Center in Bedlewo, Poland, May 15-19, 2017. His talk had the title "Instantaneous Blowup, Old and News". Also, Professor Gisele Godstein gave a talk at the same conference, entitled "Dynamic Boundary Conditions in Science".
- Béla Bollobás presented the 28th Marden Lecture on March 28, 2017, at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.
- Jerome Goldstein gave a plenary talk at the ICMC Summer Meeting on Differential Equations on February 8, 2017, at Sao Carlos, Brazil.
- Anna Kaminska was one of five Invited Lecturers at the 12th ILJU School of Mathematics on Banach Spaces and Related Topics, held January 5-11, 2017 at POSTECH, part of the Pohang Mathematics Institute in Pohang, Korea.
- Fernanda Botelho presented an invited lecture at the OTOA Conference on "Recent Advances in Operator Theory and Operator Algebras". The conference took place December 13-22, 2016, hosted by the prestigious Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore, India.
- Irena Lasiecka and Roberto Triggiani were two of the four organizers of the Oberwolfach Seminar 2016 on Mathematical Theory of Evolutionary Fluid-Flow Structure Interactions, organized by Mathematisches Forschungsinstitue at Oberwolfach, Germany, November 10-16, 2016. The other two organizers were Igor Kukawica, University of Southern California, and Barbara Kaltenbacher, Klagenfurt University, Austria.
- Fernanda Botelho was an invited speaker at the International Meeting on Commutative Algebra: Banach Algebras, held at the Nara University of Education in Kyoto, Japan, November 4-6, 2016. Her talk was titled "Algebraic Reflexivity of Sets of Operators".
- Fernanda Botelho gave a talk entitled Contractive Projections on Banach Spaces at the RIMS Workshop, hosted by the Research Institute on Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University, Japan, October 31-November 2, 2016.
- Vladimir Nikiforov was an invited speaker at the EXCILL III: Extremal Combinatorics conference at the Illinois Institute of Technology, August 8-10, 2016.
- Thomas Hagen delivered two half-hour invited talks at the 11th AIMS Conference on Dynamical Systems, Differential Equations and Applications, held in Orlando from July 1 – July 5, 2016. His lectures were entitled “Surface tension driven flow in networks or fluid dynamics of beetle juice” and “Analytical problems for free liquid films”. He was also a co-organizer for a Special Session on “Applied Analysis and Dynamics in Engineering and Sciences” at this conference.
- Jerome Goldstein was honored with a Day in Honor of Jerry Goldstein (click on Seminaires et Conferences), sponsored by the Laboratoire de Mathematiques et Applications, University of Poitiers, France, on June 23, 2016.
- Hongqiu Chen delivered a half-hour invited talk at the Seventy-Seventh Midwest PDE Seminar which was held May 7-8, 2016 at the University of Cincinnati.
- Irena Lasiecka delivered one of the three plenary addresses at the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Sectional Meeting in Stony Brook, March 19, 2016.
- Irena Lasiecka gave one of the three Invited Addresses at the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Spring 2015 Meeting, held at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, March 19-20, 2016. Her talk was on Mathematical theory of PDE dynamics arising in flow-fluid structure interactions.
- Hongqiu Chen gave a talk on Water Waves: Theory, Simulations, and Experiments, A Communication Between Mathematics and Engineering, at the National Taiwan University on March 13, 2016, in Taipei, Taiwan.
- David Grynkiewicz presented a plenary lecture at the Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory 2016 conference, held at Karl-Franzens-Universität, Graz, Austria, January 4-8, 2016. David was one of the seven plenary speakers among over 40 contributed presenters. His talk was entitled "The Freiman 3k-4 Theorem".
- Béla Bollobás was one of three Invited Speakers at the 26th International Workshop on Combinatorial Algorithms, held in Verona (Italy), October 5-7, 2015.
- Irena Lasiecka was one of the invited speakers at the XIV Workshop on Partial Differential Equations (XIV WPDE RIO2015), organized by the University of Rio de Janeiro and LNCC, held on September 22-25, 2015, in Petropolis-RJ, Brasil. Her talk was on Local existence, global existence, and stability of solutions to quasilinear systems arising in fluid structure interactions.
