Pep Band Audition and Participation Information
Instruments in the MSS Pep Band include piccolo, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, mellophone, trombone, baritone, tuba, electric bass, electric guitar, synthesizer, drumset, and auxiliary percussion (bass drum and cymbals).
The audition process for woodwinds and brass is different from that of the rhythm section instruments, but everyone will complete the Audition Registration Form. Please read the instructions below for your specific instrument before completing the form.
The audition process for woodwinds and brass instruments will be through a video submission in the audition form. All woodwind and brass players who are in the marching band during the fall are guaranteed a place in the Pep Band. However, all must still submit an audition video for a playing score. This score helps us divide the player pool into two equal groups to cover all the games and factors into travel selection at the end of the season. The link to access the music will be below. Here are some instructions:
Record a video of yourself playing the following music in one file:
- A scale of your choice to your highest comfortable note
- Go Tigers Go - Fight Song
- Eye of the Tiger
- I’m so Glad
You will have the pdf files and MP3’s of the music to use as your guide, but feel free to use your own interpretation during the audition.

REHEARSALS
1st Rehearsal: Monday, October 7th, 6 pm to 8 pm.
Rehearsal Time / Fall Semester: Mondays 6 pm to 8 pm
We will move from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm when marching ends the season.
Rehearsal Time / Spring Semester: Mondays 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
All practices and assigned events are mandatory for all members of the MSS Pep Band. If you have a scheduling conflict with an assigned event, you must find a substitute for the same instrument and part. If you cannot find one, email Dr. Augusto to communicate the situation and ask your options. This gives you some flexibility if you have a conflict with an assigned event. The only excused absences from practice or performances are class conflict, health issues, or family emergencies. We will have only one rehearsal per week.
A limited inventory of available instruments can be used for the Pep Band. Students using university instruments or equipment must pay a $25 maintenance fee. If you need an instrument for your audition, please send an email to our Graduate Assistant Erin Duke (enduke@memphis.edu) and Cc Dr. Augusto (jgstdslv@memphis.edu) with the subject PEP BAND - INSTRUMENT.
Results
After the audition, the results will be announced on October 2 by 6 PM. Pep Band will be split into two groups, Blue Band and Gray Band. Each group performs at half of the men’s and half of the women’s games.
