Mississippi Embayment Research Center
The Mississippi Embayment Research Center (MERC) at the University of Memphis is an emerging geologic sample repository and multidisciplinary research center, addressing future science, engineering, and workforce needs in the Mississippi Embayment region. The MERC is actively seeking funding for state-of-the-art facilites and instrumentation, including a Geoprobe 8150LS rotary sonic drill rig, which will enable the recovery of relatively undisturbed sediment and groundwater samples from depths up to 150 meters. This equipment is crucial for exploring the subsurface architecture of the Mississippi Embayment, which includes abundant nationally significant resources such as the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer Mississippi Embayment aquifer system, heavy mineral sands, and geohazards like the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ).
Mission
The MERC's focus on detailed subsurface characterization aims to enhance our paleodrainage understanding of the Mississippi fluvial system, groundwater dynamics, seismic hazards and fluvial tectonic interactions throughout the Cenozoic associated with the NMSZ, and sedimentological responses to late Mesozoic through Cenozoic paleoclimatic changes. By integrating drill core data, MERC supports innovative research across geology, geophysics, hydrology, and environmental science. This research will provide valuable insights into sustainable resource management and disaster preparedness, contributing to the broader scientific community’s knowledge.
Vision
The MERC is commited to fostering collaboration among regional universities, government
agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private industries. By promotng a collaborative
environment, the MERC aims to leverage the collective expertise and resources of these
entities to address existing and emergent environmental challenges. This cooperative
approach ensures that the advancements and benefits of the research are shared widely
and equitably, supporting the region's overall resilience and sustainability. Additionally,
the MERC is dedicated to inclusivity and education, broadening partcipation in STEM
fields, particularly among underrepresented groups in the Mid-South region. A major
focus of the center will be a robust infrastructure for training and research, which
we hope will cultivate a new generation of scientists and engineers, equipping them
to tackle the pressing environmental challenges
of the Mississippi River Delta.
