Ready to Shape the Future of Public Health?

UofM School of Public Health Announces 2024-25 Hackathon

September 20, 2024 – What if the next breakthrough in public health is already in the mind of a young innovator? With that idea in mind, the University of Memphis School of Public Health is inviting high school and university students everywhere to participate in its 2024-2025 Public Health IDEAS Hackathon.

The theme is Innovate for Health: Empower Youth for Digital Health and Well-Being. Designed to inspire students to lead the charge, the Hackathon will focus on the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-being for All Ages.

During the course of this months-long event, Hackathon participants will have the opportunity to work on real-world public health problems, develop their innovative ideas and participate in workshops to develop those ideas before presenting them to a panel of esteemed judges. Hackathon finalists will be revealed in January 2025, with the winner announced following a final pitch in March.

Empowering the Next Generation of Public Health Innovators

In a world where public health challenges—ranging from pandemics to mental health crises—demand urgent and creative responses, the Public Health Hackathon provides a platform for high school students (grades 9-12) and UofM students to collaborate, team up and create innovative, research-driven solutions. This event aims to foster friendly competition and offer meaningful opportunities to connect with leading public health professionals, mentors and peers.

“This model can create triple benefits as an educational institution, a well-being hub connecting young people to services and an enabler for health-related engagement,” said Ashish Joshi, dean of the University of Memphis School of Public Health.
Participants in the 2024-2025 Public Health Hackathon will have the opportunity to:

  • Turn Ideas into Action: Develop and pitch real-world solutions to challenges like mental health, disease prevention and health equity.
  • Network and Learn from Experts: Gain mentorship from public health professionals who will help refine their projects.
  • Develop Skills for the Future: Engage in hands-on workshops focused on project design, innovative thinking and pitching.
  • Create a Global Impact: Contribute directly to the achievement of SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being with solutions that benefit both local and global communities.

Two information sessions will be held, the first on Monday, Sept. 30 and the second on Monday Oct. 21.

To secure a spot, hackathon participants need to register by Monday, Nov. 18. Visit memphis.edu/publichealth for more information and to register for the hackathon.
