UofM School of Public Health Convenes Summit
15 countries represented at collaborative workshop on public health diplomacy
September 25, 2024 — In a first-of-its-kind summit, public health experts from around the globe are visiting the University of Memphis for the Public Health Diplomacy Summit from Sept. 25-27. The event was organized by the University of Memphis School of Public Health in collaboration with the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) and the Global Network for Academic Public Health (GNAPH), an alliance of seven regional associations representing schools and programs of public health worldwide.
Representatives from 15 countries, many from schools of public health, will share their insights on how the intersection of international relations, global health and policy can advance the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals through the understanding of broad stakeholder engagement, consensus building, negotiations and outcomes.
The summit aims to improve collaboration and coordination among participants to promote good health and well-being globally. Participants will identify skills and competencies needed to prepare future workforces in public health diplomacy.
Besides the United States, those countries include Australia, Brazil, Germany, Grenada, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malaysia, Nigeria, Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and Taiwan.
“Public health diplomacy can be a gateway to improve overall health and well-being of individuals, their families and the communities in Memphis and around the globe. I’m proud the University of Memphis School of Public Health is organizing this inaugural summit,” said Ashish Joshi, dean of the School of Public Health. “Our work here is gaining international attention for its innovative and collaborative approach to addressing the needs of communities around the world.”
