Memphis Athletics Receives Record $13 Million Commitment
July 24, 2019 - The University of Memphis Athletics Department announced Wednesday a $13 million commitment that will support athletics through the establishment of the Gary W. and Barbara Bryant Family Trusts.
The generous gift from Gary W. and Barbara Bryant is the largest commitment in Memphis Athletics history, and the second-largest gift in University of Memphis history.
“We are incredibly grateful for this transformative gift that will impact the department and student-athletes for generations to come,” stated Allie Prescott, Interim Director of Athletics. “The foresight shown by Gary and Barbara in making this commitment is humbling. We are grateful for their commitment and passion to Memphis Athletics. I would like to thank and commend Dr. Adam Walker for his work in helping establish this gift for our Athletic Department.”
The gift establishes the Gary and Barbara Bryant Athletic Excellence Fund, an endowment funded through their estate. Funds will be used at the department’s discretion to support the overall vision for Memphis Athletics and student-athletes.
“This remarkable gift also showcases the Bryants’ philanthropic spirit, as we collaborated with another conference institution that is also a recipient of a portion of their trusts,” stated Walker, Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director. “That is a rare occurrence, especially given the size of the commitment. The Bryant Family gift is extraordinary, and will leave an indelible mark on Memphis Athletics.”
Mr. Bryant graduated from The University of Memphis in 1972 with honors, and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He became a Certified Public Accountant and specialized in insurance industry accounting. After several years in public accounting, he later became the President and CEO of several life and health insurance companies.
“Barbara and I have been pretty athletic throughout our years, and we both believe strongly in obtaining a quality education to open more doors and opportunities,” stated Mr. Bryant.
“We have made this commitment to the University of Memphis Athletic Department to enable future student-athletes to obtain a great education and play their gifted sport at my alma mater.
“I feel very fortunate to be able to do this for my alma mater and only hope more alumni do the same, and financially support our Tigers and our University. Go Tigers Go!!”
