Undergraduate MECH Course Permit Requests

Submit the Course Permit Request Form to make the following requests for undergraduate courses beginning with a MECH prefix:

  • Permission to enroll in an Honors Section of a course.
  • Permission to enroll in Full/Closed Classes.
  • Permission to enroll in MECH4391 Mechanical Engineering Projects
  • Permission to enroll in MECH4397 Mechanical Engineering Practicum
  • Permission to enroll in a course with a missing Prerequisite/Corequisite.

Permits for MECH prefix courses will not be issued for requests received after the Last Day to Web Register for classes during an academic term.

Full/Closed Classes

  • Students interested in registering for a course section that is full/closed must place themselves on the Waitlist. Students will be notified via email through the Registrar’s office if a space opens up, and instructions will inform the student to register for the course within 24 hours of receiving notification to secure a place in the class.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Department does not typically grant requests for permits to enroll in Full/Closed classes due to limited classroom and laboratory seating. Students submitting a request for a permit to enroll in a Full/Closed Class must provide a justification in the Course Permit Request Form of extraordinary circumstances for the request to be considered.

Admittance into Honors Sections

  • Students interested in registering for a 3-credit hour Honors section of a undergraduate mechanical engineering (MECH) course listed in the Class Schedule need to follow these steps:
    1. Contact the course instructor and arrange a meeting to discuss the expectations for the Honors course. The student and instructor must agree on the project proposal and timeline for completion.
    2. Complete and sign the Contract for Honors Section Form based on the agreement between the student and instructor.
    3. Submit a Course Permit Request Form and attach the signed Contract for Honors Section Form in the request.
    4. The Undergraduate Program Coordinator will review the Contract for Honors Sections Form to ensure that the Contract between the student and instructor adequately adds (a) unique course requirement(s) that justify earning Honors credit for the course.
  • Students interested in receiving Honors credit for a 3-credit mechanical engineering course (MECH) that does not have a listed Honors section in the Class Schedule can complete an Honors Contract through the Helen Hardin Honors College

Admittance into MECH4391 Mechanical Engineering Project

  • Students interested in receiving Honors credit for a 3-credit mechanical engineering course (MECH) that does not have a listed Honors section in the Class Schedule can complete an Honors Contract through the Helen Hardin Honors College
    1. Review the course Syllabus
    2. Consult with a Mechanical Engineering faculty member who is willing to serve as a mentor and formulate a special project or research experience
    3. Complete and electronically sign the Contract for MECH4391 Form based on the agreement between the student and faculty mentor.
    4. Submit a Course Permit Request Form and attach the signed Contract for MECH4391 Form in the request.
    5. The Undergraduate Program Coordinator will review the Contract for MECH4391 Form to ensure that the Contract between the student and mentor adequately meet the requirement(s) outlined in the Syllabus that justify earning credit for the course.

Admittance into MECH4397 Mechanical Engineering Practicum

  • Students interested in registering for 1-3-credit hours of mechanical engineering practicum while participating in an approved internship or cooperative education (Co-op) work experience need to follow these steps:
    1. Review the course Syllabus
    2. Contact the Herff College Engineering Co-Op & Internship Coordinator and provide a description of the work experience, contact information for the employer, the duration of the work experience, and an estimate of the number of hours of work per week which will be expected.
    3. The Herff College Engineering Co-Op & Internship Coordinator will review the information and verify the work experience to ensure it adequately meets the requirement(s) outlined in the Syllabus that justify earning credit for the course.

Prerequisite/Corequisite Waivers

  • Students must earn a C- or better in all prerequisite courses and satisfy all prerequisite requirements to enroll in undergraduate mechanical engineering (MECH) courses.
  • If a student has received transfer course credit, but the registration system is not recognizing the credit as a prerequisite/corequisite, then the student should submit a Course Permit Request Form to request a waiver.
  • Students are responsible for the proper completion of the mechanical engineering academic program, for familiarity with all requirements of the curriculum, and for meeting all the degree requirements. Advisors will counsel students, but the final responsibility remains that of the student. As such, the Mechanical Engineering Department will only consider prerequisite waivers for students missing (a) prerequisite course(s) and/or requirement(s) for mechanical engineering courses (MECH) if a student has been affected by a curriculum or program change which will directly result in the delay of the student’s anticipated graduation date and the student has no other reasonable recourse within an academic year to adjust to the curriculum change.
