Advising
Advising in the Department of Journalism and Strategic Media is important because nearly 70 percent of our students, whether they began at the University of Memphis or transferred from another four-year university or a community college finish in six years or fewer. That number compares with a University-wide average of 45 percent completion in six years.
The Department prides itself on our one-on-one advising that begins as soon as a student becomes an advertising, creative mass media, journalism or public relations major. Students meet with their adviser and are cleared to register twice a year—once in the fall for the spring semester and again in the spring for the summer and fall semesters. After students have declared their major, they are assigned a permanent adviser in their area of study and continue to see that adviser until they graduate. Additionally, students must familiarize themselves with the information in the University catalog, the departmental worksheets for the four majors located in the Main Office (300 MJ) and the UMDegree online degree planner.
