PLEASE ATTACH A SUMMATION OF STUDENT EVALUATIONS FOR EACH COURSE ASSESSED.

Summary of Teaching Evaluations

I have been fortunate to experience very positive ratings from my students since joining the faculty of The University of Memphis.  In addition to the following discussion I have included a chart summarizing my SIRS scores for each course assessed since 1996 as well as the corresponding department and college averages for each term.

I have consistently bettered the Department of Journalism and College of Communication and Fine Arts means for evaluation categories with rare exception.  My scores for instructor involvement, student interest, student-teacher interaction, and course organization, where a lower number indicates better performance, are consistently superior.  And in the block of questions (13-16) measuring student perception of course demands, where a higher number indicates more positive student response, I likewise score consistently better than the department and college means.

Additionally, it should be noted that my course grade point averages are consistently high.  I do not believe that is a reflection of my courses lacking rigor.  Indeed, my SIRS evaluations indicated I do challenge students to a greater degree than many of their other professors.  Rather, I believe the higher grade point averages reflect more effectiveness on my part to motivate students to do their best.  I provide substantial feedback to them in my courses, with numerous quizzes to encourage them to keep up with their readings.  I also give them the opportunity to submit rough draft term papers for a critique from which they can then improve their work.  It takes more time on my part but I believe this kind of effort pays big dividends. My primary goal is to help students to be more consistent in their studies while providing assistance in the learning process throughout the semester.  Additionally, I make every effort to give mid-term examinations and provide grades to students before the final drop date.  That way students in danger of failing, who are not willing to do the work necessary to improve their performance, are afforded the opportunity to exit the course without penalty.

I strongly believe that teaching is an opportunity to help others succeed, not merely an exercise in weeding out people.  Particularly at an urban university, with a high percentage of students working significant hours as well as coming from homes where no one has graduated from college, more mentoring activity must be mixed into the daily interchange of teacher and student.  Teaching at the university level can provide a life changing experience for others.  It is my goal to help students absorb their academic material, develop strong work ethics, and learn to balance their time commitments so they can ultimately realize their dreams.

APPENDIX B

The following students have been personally mentored in their efforts to complete their journalism education and pursue professional employment in their fields of interest.  Keeping up with students post-graduation is problematical.  I have indicated their last known employment, which in many cases is within the last year.  However, I have lost contact with a few of these students recently.

APPENDIX C

Instructor & Producer, syndicated television ski tips series, 1982-1990.  The annual series of ski tips was syndicated to as many as 60 television markets over the eight years they were in production.  They were video taped each year at Winter Park, CO., and used by stations as newscast sports segment inserts.  Funding was provided by a consortium of ski industry suppliers (Salomon Ski Bindings, Koflach Boots, Blizzard Skis, Dynastar Skis) and Colorado Ski Country USA, the ski industry trade organization in Colorado.  I served as instructor and producer, responsible for writing, directing, and serving as on-camera talent for the tips.  They were video taped, edited, and syndicated to stations throughout the United States by Peak Productions of Winter Park, CO.

Producer/Reporter, Yellowstone: Battle for a national treasure, 1989.  This one hour television documentary aired on KMGH-TV, Denver, CO., examining the controversial forest fires of 1988 and the history of the management of Yellowstone National Park.  The program received the 1989 Rocky Mountain Region Emmy for documentary television.

Producer/Reporter, Lives, loves, and lyrics: New country and the mainstream.  This one hour television documentary aired on KMGH-TV, Denver, CO., examining the growth of country music into one of the dominant commercial radio music formats in the nation.

Moderator, Informed Sources, 1994-1996.  The program aired on WKNO-TV, Memphis, TN.  It was a reporters’ roundtable weekly discussion of controversial issues in the news including politics, traditional news, and sports.  I served as moderator on a total of 60 separate programs.

Producer / moderator , video support for on-line Department of Journalism master’s program, University of Memphis (1994-1995).  When launching the department’s on-line master’s program it was clear students would not generally have available evolving video streaming technology on their home computers.  Thus, distant seminar participants would be engaging with professors only in keyboarded discussions of material.  For that reason, the Journalism Administration Methods 7100 seminar during summer session, 1994, was video taped, and then edited into six programs of seminar discussions.  Those sessions were dubbed and mailed to all on-line JOUR 7100 students spring semester, 1995, to augment their text readings and on-line discussions.

Anchor, A Conversation with Angus McEachran (1995, May 7).  This prime time 30 minute profile of Commercial Appeal Editor & President Angus McEachran was produced by WKNO-TV, Memphis, TN.  It included a discussion of the state of the newspaper industry and major issues of the Memphis region.  The program was re-broadcast by WKNO-TV May 26, 1995.

Executive Producer, Insight, the University of Memphis cable television news magazine, 1996-2004.  The program is the product of three years of effort in adjusting course flow, acquiring necessary equipment, and assembling other resources to enable students in both journalism and communications to apply their new skills learned at the university in full length, weekly 30 minute programs which include national and international news, as well as campus oriented stories and interviews.  Pilot programs were produced fall 1996, and regularly scheduled programming began in January 1997 for each week of the fall and spring semesters.  Additionally, the successful effort to launch the first regularly scheduled television news magazine by the university also contributed to the acquisition of an annually renewing grant of $10,000 from Time Warner, Mid-South Division to assist in equipment upgrades and other needs.

Redmond, J. (1996-1997).  Editor: Media Corner.  OneKey: The smart search engine (A Memphis, TN. based Internet search engine and electronic magazine [Online].  Available: http://www.onekey.com.  Served as the editor of radio, television, newspaper, and magazine sites included in the service’s Media Top 40 Sites listing.  The position included researching and writing monthly on-line editorials regarding the state of journalism oriented World Wide Web site development as the Internet expanded.  Additionally, conducted content analysis of 1,679 radio and television sites which was published on OneKey in August 1996.  In March, 1997, serious funding problems required the owner of the service to pare back services and staff substantially to a minimal search engine index service.
