Applying for A Social Security Number (SSN)
A Social Security number (SSN) is a unique identifier issued by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA Office accepts walk-in applications. There is no need to call or make an appointment online.
Important Notes
- You can apply for the SSN after you receive a job offer.
- Put a valid U.S. address on the SSN application form because the SSN card will be mailed to you.
- Do not mail original documents to the SSA Office.
- International students must complete the SEVIS check-in so the ISS staff can register your F-1 record in SEVIS before starting the SSN application.
- International students should be present in the U.S. for 10 days before starting the SSN application to ensure your arrival record is updated in the federal government system. If your information is not in the federal government system when you apply for the SSN, your SSN application will be delayed.
