Out of Status

Some common academic and personal issues may terminate a student's F-1 status but do not negatively impact their ability to get a new I-20 in the future if circumstances change. Students should contact ISS if any of these situations occurs:

  • Academic suspension: Communication about academic suspension will come from your academic department and the CARES Office (for undergraduate students) or the Graduate School (for graduate students). Direct any questions about academic suspension and readmission to UofM to your academic department. ISS is required to terminate the F-1 status of any student who receives academic suspension.
  • Financial difficulties or family emergencies that force an interruption in, or early withdrawal from, your program of study.
  • Mandatory military service in the your home country before completion of the program.
  • A delay in the receipt of an F-1 visa preventing you from attending classes as required.

At the program end date noted on the I-20, students (and their dependents) may have a number of options. These include changing your immigration status, applying for Optional Practical Training, transferring to another SEVP-certified school, or leaving the United States. If you choose to depart, you have 60 days after the program end date to do so.

Some situations immediately terminate a student's F-1 status and require the student to depart the U.S. immediately, without benefit of a grace period. These include suspension or expulsion for misconduct unrelated to academic performance, unauthorized work, failure to meet the enrollment requirements, and violation of U.S. laws.
