Academic Probation/Suspension
While the ISS office does not report your grades in SEVIS, there are some situations in which your academic performance can affect your F-1 record.
Academic Probation
Please read more about UofM’s policy on Academic Probation here. You should talk with your academic advisor if you have specific questions or concerns about Academic Probation. The ISS office does not report Academic Probation in SEVIS, and therefore Academic Probation does not have any immediate impact on your immigration status.
Students on Academic Probation are allowed to travel outside the US and reenter (with proper documentation- read more here), work on-campus, and apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) if eligible. Please note that your academic department may set internal restrictions for students on Academic Probation, such as internship eligibility.
Students on Academic Probation should meet with their academic advisor regularly and work to improve their academic situation. Without improvement, Academic Probation may lead to Academic Suspension, and Academic Suspension is a cause for termination of your F-1 record.
Academic Suspension
Please read more about UofM’s policy on Academic Suspension here. You should talk with your academic advisor if you have specific questions or concerns about Academic Suspension.
Communication about Academic Suspension will come from your academic department and the CARES Office (for undergraduate students) or the Graduate School (for graduate students). Academic Suspension is handled by your academic department so you should direct questions about readmission to UofM and the Academic Suspension Appeal process to your academic department.
The ISS office will be notified of students who have been issued an Official Suspension Letter, and we are required to terminate the F-1 record for any such students.
Students who have been suspended from their academic program and whose F-1 record has been terminated for the reason of Academic Suspension have the following options:
- Leave the US immediately.
- Receive acceptance to another US school, transfer your terminated record to new school, and file for reinstatement with the new school.
- Leave the US, receive acceptance to another US school, and reenter the US on an initial I-20 with new SEVIS ID. This option requires repaying the I-901 fee and possibly reapplying for a new F-1 visa.
Achieving Academic Success
