SEVIS
Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is the web-based system established by the Department of Homeland Security to maintain information on international nonimmigrant students and exchange visitors in the United States. It is the system used to generate the Form I-20 and to enter work authorization or endorsement for F-1 students.
- Each school has Designated School Officials (DSOs) who are authorized to create and edit SEVIS records. The staff members of the International Student Services office are the DSOs for the University of Memphis.
- If you attended a school in the U.S. before coming to UofM, that school created a record for you in SEVIS. Otherwise, we created the record when you accepted our offer of admission. The information in SEVIS generates the I-20 form that you used to request a visa.
- It is very important that you tell ISS about any changes to the information contained
in your SEVIS record within 10 days of the change occurring. These changes include
(but are not limited to):
- Your physical address and email address
- Your telephone number
- Your passport number and expiration date
- Your major or field of study
- Your SEVIS record remains for at least three years after you complete your studies. The information in it can be taken into consideration if you apply for other nonimmigrant or immigrant status in the future.
