On-Campus Employment

Definition of On-Campus Employment

  • On-campus employment includes work for departments or administrative offices of the University, the library, recreational center, etc. It also includes graduate assistantships. 
  • On-campus employment also includes employment with on-campus commercial businesses that provide services for students, like the bookstore or restaurants. 
  • It can include work done at an off-campus location that is educationally affiliated with UofM. The student must be paid by UofM.
  • On-campus employment does not include self-employment like performing services for other students or working remotely from your residence for an off-campus company. Such activity is illegal.

 

Conditions of On-Campus Employment for F-1 International Students

  • Must be maintaining F-1 status and meeting the F-1 enrollment requirements.
  • Work does not have to be related to course of study.
  • On-campus work is limited to 20 hours per work week while school is in session. Students are required to check with their academic departments to ensure the number of work hours is in accordance with academic policies.
  • Work can be full-time during official university holidays and academic breaks if the F-1 student will be returning to classes the following term.
  • Students may not work on campus after completion of their studies.
  • Students are not eligible for the federal work-study program.
  • Students do not require any special F-1 authorization to work on campus, and do not need to report on-campus employment to ISS unless they have an approved reduced course load.
  • Concurrent enrollment at the University of Memphis and a community college or another university is not acceptable for enrollment requirements for employment eligibility at this university.
  • Students may work as early as 30 days before the start of a program of study. If students start working before the program of study, they must inform ISS before they begin work.
  • Students are required to obtain a Social Security Number if they take up on-campus employment.
