Integrative Studies: Secondary Math (BSEd)

The BSEd Integrative Studies: Secondary Math program in the College of Education is committed to shaping dedicated educators to teach mathematics with depth and impact. This specialized track is designed to deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures, while preparing you to excel as a highly qualified math teacher for grades 6-12. Through intensive clinical experiences, including a full year "in residence" at a local school where you'll observe, tutor, and teach, you will gain invaluable hands-on training in diverse educational settings.

In this program, you will collaborate closely with both mathematics and education faculty to learn effective teaching strategies tailored for urban schools. We believe in actively engaging students in mathematical practices rather than passively observing. Contextualizing mathematics within cultural frameworks, our curriculum underscores the importance of cultural identities, histories, and social justice in education.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will earn a teaching license, ready to make a meaningful difference in the lives of diverse, historically marginalized student populations. All teaching candidates obtaining a BSEd and a Tennessee teaching license must complete the Professional Seminar (ICL 4800) and complete and pass the Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA).

Important Information

Students must be admitted to the College of Education's Teacher Education Program (TEP) by the end ot their Junior I semester. All Junior I coursework must be completed and passed with a C- or better before being permitted to register for Junior II coursework. Junior II (Pre-Residency) courses must also be completed and passed with a C- or better before being permitted to register to Residency I courses.
