What influenced your decision to attend Herff College of Engineering?
The strong sense of community emphasized by previous students influenced my decision to attend Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis. The availability of scholarships also made pursuing my degree more accessible, allowing me to concentrate on my academic goals without financial worries. However, what ultimately sealed my decision was my desire to be part of a larger, supportive environment where I could grow academically and personally. I was attracted to the idea of being in an institution where I would be more than just a number while still benefiting from the resources of a well-established college. The college's reputation for fostering a nurturing atmosphere, combined with its strong academic standing, reassured me that I would receive personalized attention and mentorship from faculty who genuinely care about the success of their students.
How did Herff prepare you for your career?
The Herff College of Engineering prepared me for my career by providing me with new opportunities and helping me discover my interests. It defined my career goals and equipped me with essential technical and soft skills. Through hands-on projects and research, I gained practical experience that deepened my understanding of engineering principles. Overall, my time at Herff College was transformative, allowing me to enhance my professional skills.
What skills or knowledge did you learn throughout the program that you found most helpful in your career?
During my college experience, I developed strong problem-solving and communication skills. For instance, my research experience taught me how to systematically and creatively navigate complex problems. I also learned to communicate effectively, conveying intricate ideas to diverse audiences. Additionally, I realized the importance of being detail-oriented and flexible, which has equipped me to approach challenges confidently.
Who was your most impactful professor? Why?
My most impactful professor was Dr. Gary Bowlin, my principal investigator (PI). Working in his Tissue Engineering and Regeneration Lab opened my eyes to new opportunities and fueled my interest for cardiology. He nurtured my curiosity and actively supported my career aspirations, providing invaluable guidance on both academic and professional fronts. When challenges arose, his patience and wisdom helped me navigate them effectively. Dr. Bowlin encouraged me to think critically, consistently taking time to discuss my ideas, and offering constructive feedback that refined my research skills. His unwavering support was instrumental in helping me achieve several academic milestones, including publishing my work and presenting at various conferences. His belief in my potential and genuine investment in my success profoundly shaped my academic journey and future career. I also want to acknowledge Isaiah Surbrook and Kenneth Hoggan, who have significantly impacted my life. Isaiah’s special topics course equipped me with essential college skills and imparted valuable real-life lessons, such as budgeting and networking. While Kenneth is not a professor, he introduced me to the world of research, supported me during challenging times, and taught me many crucial life skills. These individuals have provided me with the tools and knowledge that will undoubtedly influence my future!
Were you involved in student groups? If so, which one(s)?
I was actively involved in several student organizations during my time in school. I served as the president of Tau Beta Pi (TBP), the secretary of Alpha Eta Mu Beta (AEMB), and the Engineering Student Council representative for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). I was also a member of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). Additionally, I was as an engineering ambassador.
What support(s) did you have during your time as a college student? How did you keep focused on the goal?
My most significant support came from my family, friends, and lab mates. My family encouraged me and helped me stay motivated during challenging times. My friends and lab mates fostered a collaborative environment, challenging me to become a better engineer and ultimately facilitating my academic and personal growth. Additionally, my principal investigator (PI) provided invaluable guidance and mentorship, helping me navigate research challenges and encouraging me to pursue my interests. Kenneth Hoggan also played a crucial role, offering mentorship and always making himself available when I needed help. He introduced me to new opportunities, shared valuable life advice, and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. The support I received from everyone has built my confidence and shaped my academic journey. To stay focused on my goals, I continually reminded myself why I pursued this path and the impact I wanted to make. Surrounding myself with like-minded individuals and having the support of my professors and Kenneth Hoggan made it easier to stay on track.
What was your greatest memory from your time at Herff?
Among my many great memories, my favorite is the moment I achieved a breakthrough in my research after months of persistent effort, along with the opportunity to travel to different conferences to share my findings.
What advice would you give those considering enrolling in Herff College of Engineering?
If you're considering enrolling in the Herff College of Engineering, my advice is simple: "Do it!" Pursuing a degree in engineering is incredibly rewarding, and Herff College offers numerous resources and activities to enhance your experience. It's essential not to pay attention to stereotypes about engineering. While the coursework can be challenging, everyone's journey is unique. Remember, earning an engineering degree is achievable if you stay persistent. Engage actively with your professors; they can provide valuable guidance on the subject matter and help you build meaningful industry connections that may lead to internships or job opportunities. Additionally, joining clubs is an excellent way to network and acquire new skills. Lastly, focus on managing your time effectively. While studying is crucial for success in your classes, prioritizing your mental health is just as important. Take time to have fun in college and make the most of your college experience!
What do you know now that you wish you had known during your time at Herff?
One thing I wish I had known during my time at Herff College of Engineering is the importance of networking and building relationships with peers, professors, and industry professionals as these connections can lead to valuable internship and job opportunities. Additionally, I wish I had taken full advantage of career services earlier, such as resume workshops, career fairs, and mock interviews.
Was your Herff experience worth the price? If you could do it over again, what would you do differently?
Absolutely! The friendships, connections, and memories made it all worth the cost. I was especially pleased to graduate with two degrees debt-free. If I could go back and do it again, I would get involved in research and clubs earlier in my college career. Additionally, I would try to find more time to have fun and fully enjoy the college experience.
