What influenced your decision to attend Herff College of Engineering?
My love for Memphis and the impressive expertise and skillsets that the faculty at Herff College of Engineering possess led me to attend the Herff College of Engineering. I was and am still so excited for the opportunity to receive hands on training from widely renowned experts in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
How did Herff prepare you for your career?
The Herff College of Engineering has supported my growth as a graduate student and researcher by providing access and exposure to industry and institutional collaborations, guest speakers from across the world and from various disciplines, and the support to attend conferences to present my research and gain insight and inspiration from other researchers.
What skills or knowledge did you learn throughout the program that you found most helpful in your career?
I've learned to think critically, set and accomplish goals for myself, and to use obstacles as an opportunity for growth and to build character both as a person and as a researcher.
Who was your most impactful professor? Why?
Dr. Gary Bowlin's personal, professional, and scientific mentorship have been invaluable to me and I could not be where I am today without him. He has given me the balance of both hands-on direction and the space to develop and grow as an independent student and researcher.
Were you involved in student groups? If so, which one(s)?
I currently serve as the president of the Biomedical Engineering Honor Society, Alpha Eta Mu Beta, and am a member of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES).
What support(s) did you have during your time as a college student? How did you keep focused on the goal?
My colleagues in the lab, the amazing friends I have made along the way, and my cat, Phillip. I stay focused on the goal by reminding myself that I do this because of a love of learning and a desire to constantly grow and improve.
What was your greatest memory from your time at Herff?
The 2022 Biannual International Society for Applied Cardiovascular Biology (ISACB) meeting hosted by the University of Memphis brought new friends, inspiration for new research, and lots of fond memories.
What advice would you give those considering enrolling in Herff College of Engineering?
Embrace the challenge, be flexible to change and grow, and hold on to your passion for learning.
What do you know now that you wish you had known during your time at Herff?
Don't be afraid of failure. It is part of the process, especially in research. Learn from your mistakes and allow them to guide you toward success. Fail forward!
Was your Herff experience worth the price? If you could do it over again, what would you do differently?
Absolutely. I would get more involved in the Herff Community earlier on.
